Hi

One of my oldest friends turns 30 soon. He enjoys a tipple and so I would like to get him something decent for a gift.

I would like to spend between £50-£75 but up to £100 for the right bottle.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

I know he enjoys single malts alot so was thinking of a 30 year old bottle? - If so does anyone have any reccomendations? As far as his taste goes he likes something smooth and no more peaty than Laphroaig (I know there are not that many!)

The other idea was a bottle of Port or wine from 1979 but I have no idea about the vintage for that year? If it was any good or not - was thinking something like a Barolo for the wine but no idea if I could buy a single bottle as I am not flush enough for a case! and my brief research shows that 1979 wasn't a declared year for port but no real idea what that means? Would a 1979 port just be a gimmick and would I be better buying a good bottle from a declared year to put away for a bit?

Cheers!

Andy
