Stuck at the roadside .... Anybody there?

If the pressure is good I would think you would be OK to carry on. Pressure warning switch and pressure gauge are separate sensors. Can’t remember if the warning light is short to chassis to come on or open to come on. If it is open to come on then probably the wire has come off or is broken. The sensor is difficult to see because it is behind the alternator. Actually having pressure is the most important thing.

I tend to agree that it should be ok and that it is probably a simple fault.
recovery r enroute now cos I tried it a minute ago and there is a slight mechanical whine that I didn't hear the last time I had my head under the bonnet. It is kind of a whine that just doesn't sound right
thanks for your inputs and I'll keep you posted. At least the sun is shining and I didn't happen enroute to the growl!

IIRC 12v dash supply to bulb/led - single wire to pressure switch which is bolted to engine ground. Internally it makes to ground until pressure breaks the connection and the light goes off. If the switch fails it can be always on/off, if the cabling is grounded the light will always be on.
NO connection with the coil AFIK, except everything eventually traces back to the battery.
