Auto Braking

Volvo has developed a car that will brake if you don't!

Volvo has developed an advanced new system to constantly monitor the road ahead and automatically alert the driver and apply the brakes to help avoid a collision.

The system uses a radar installation in the front of the car and automatically alerts the driver with a buzzer and warning lamp, if the distance to the vehicle or obstacle in front reduces drastically.

In addition, if the system thinks the driver is not braking hard enough to stop the car in time, the system cuts in and increases the braking pressure to maximise the car's deceleration.

What's more, if the driver does not brake at all, the system automatically activates the brakes.

Let's hope the software's been fully debugged or we could see some strange behaviour from Volvo drivers in the future...

How on earth would we be able to tell the difference?

Are these systems meant to be a replacement for knowing how to drive or something? Anyone who thinks such a device would be useful shouldn't be on the *&%*^&ing road in the first place!

True, but as recent TV programmes have shown, they give licences to all sorts of idiots... if it makes it a tiny bit safer for the rest of us...

A "safety" device too far, IMO.

If it stops a volvo crashing into me than it's all very welcome.

If you drive properly, you'll never need it. So of course the entire of PH will never need it as we never have accidents because we're perfect (ly arrogant).

Might have been useful for the considerate young lady who followed me most of the way to work this morning.

I say "considerate" as she was obviously taking it upon herself to block all sight of my rear numberplate from any roadside revenue collection points by obscuring it with the front of her car! FFS I couldn't even see her bonnet in my rear-view, she was that close.

I thought all Volvo estates had it fitted as standard

I always notice the system jams the brakes on when they get to the narrow bits in those windy country lanes. Obviously it's a major software control error as it would always be better stop at the wide bits where people can pass. I assume it's a sensory overload - panic overide dimwit system.

Next it'll be a system that steers the car down the middle of the road in similar circumstances or have they got that already too?

What about if someone got so used to the system that they they were slightly unprepared when the system malfunctioned and went AWOL. An interesting liability/insurance problem I think...

excellent fun indeed ! so you have a middle laner who pisses you off, all you do is swerve a bit as you go past... nah, could be more dangerous than it's worth. Having said that, wish the lady in the car behind me had have had such a system installed. Would have saved my bumper. Grrrrr.

You have just given me an idea Carl this system is kin brilliant. If everyone had it you could stop anyone who pissed you off just by pulling in fron and then gently slowing down. That way you get out and have word. This is obviously the answer to the driver eduction programme that is so much needed.

Or take it a stage further and have it set up so that anyone who drives bad enough to set it off gets shot in the head (after the car has stopped - safety first and all that).

Edited to add: Kill the Stupid.

What with airbags, litigeous lawyers and namby pamby safety regulations the Stupid are having a hard time killing themselves off like they used to. I'm worried that evolution has faltered, so we should proactively address the problem.

Back in the good old days being extremely dim got you eaten or you froze to dead in winter, that sort of thing. Either we start making stupid mistake more deadly or we'll have to start culling them.
