Running-on problem
Discussion
Hi,
I've got the same problem on two different engines - first engine is a 3.9 Rover V8, the other a 2286cc Rover four-cylinder. Both engines are fuelled by SU carburetters, both have lumenition ignition systems and neither have had any settings changed (i.e. ignition advance / retard or mixture.
Recently (say about a month) both have "run on" when the ignition is turned off, the 4-cylinder Rover does this for about fifteeen seconds, the V8 is variable. It seems to make no difference whether either car has done a short trip or a long blast - the duration of the run-on varies.
I have pulled the spark plugs on each engine and adjusted the mixture; I have tried richer and leaner to no effect. In both cases the spark plugs have a grey to grey-brown nose and black ring at the end of the threaded portion. The engines do not pink or lack power.
Could it be that petrol is the common cause or am I missing something obvious?
Hope you can help!
