Right, its a recession and I am after something for nothing or very little. Am about to book a long weekend at a boutique style hotel chain....maybe called 'Hotel of Wine' or something similar.

Anyone know any good ways of getting an upgraded room for free???

When booking / "checking in" tell Reservations it's yours / your other halves birthday.

Might be worth trying 'honeymoon'?

Just been to Monaco and they saw 'wedding anniversary' on the booking, misunderstood and thought we'd just got married and upgraded us smile

(to a room I'd tried to book an pay for but had been told was full!)

Anniversary might be more realistic.

As with airlines though, it's the frequent customers who normally get first dibs on upgrades.

25th anniversary worked for us in Cairo.

We also had an upgrade to an amzing top floor suite in Georgetown last month. How? By arriving very late and the hotel having overbooked all the standard rooms. You can't rely on luck like that. So that's 2 upgrades out of over 60 hotel stays in 10 years.

Check they've got availability online and then ring up and negotiate. The reservation staff at HUV are authorised to negotiate and will happily do so. I normally get 3 course evening meal included in the room price.

The milestone wedding anniversary card is the easy one. You won't usually get an upgrade, but you might get a bottle of perry and some cheap chocs on the bed!

Years ago I used to ring the Renaissance in Manchester around six on a Friday to book a room, they were always full so I'd insist on leaving my number. They'd ring up 30 mins later to say we have a room, I'd turn up and be given a nice suite.

Order a bottle of Champers and chocs with a happy birthday card to be sent to the room for your arrival and mention how its a birthday treat.

That worked for me a few weeks ago when i got my friend upgraded for his birthday.

Just ask if there's any chance of an upgrade when you check in. Works more often than you might think.
