I am starting uni as a mature student next week. I live about 15 miles from the uni and will commute by car.

Is it worth living with other students? At 23 I'm not sure I could live in a rancid student house or halls with the washing up piled up to the ceiling and beer cans strewn every where. Not really my cup of tea any more.

I currently live in a really nice house and my rent is very low for the size/spec/area of the house(wood floor, brand new kitchen, massive telly etc) and my house-mates are really sound.

The only thing I lack is a decent social life of late and know there will be hundreds of nice women to meet in the coming months.

Will I be missing out not living with other students?

Any advice welcome!

cheers!

As a mature student you should be rattling the back doors off any of your female coursemates, their friends and their friends friends. It's your duty.

You use the term 'mature' loosely! Older than some students though, yes you will be, but only by a couple of years!

Move closer and get involved my friend. Be careful though I hear there are lots of nasty diseases going around these days eek

Make sure you post pics on here to show us what a good time you're having drink nudge nudge

I'm there to get a first and chlamydia. Alcohol consumption is a secondary pass-time.

Then don't do it. All it will breed is aggravation and resentment of the other students.

You can still socialise etc well enough.

A mate i'm living with this year (3rd) is only just moving out into student accommodation and he lives less than 2 miles from campus. Not all stuff is crap and not all housemates are like that. I have another friend who went the opposite way and she doesn't seem unhappy but prefers her home social life. She does find it difficult to socialise with uni mates/go out drinking now though and her commute is similar to yours. The cost of parking and finding somewhere to stay after nights out are her main issues. Personally I'd never commute as to me university is not just a place to learn but an experience to be tried, you can always decide to live somewhere different after a year.

Move in with the other students!

When I see students living alone at home with Mum and Dad I really feel that they would not have had a proper Uni experience.

Uni is more than just Relativistic Quantum Field Theory (or Beauty Therepy) you know!

Edited to add that you should not get hung-up about being a "mature student". The age difference you mention will not be noticed.

..it does depend though, not all students live like 'The Young Ones'. Ok, it isn't domesticated family life but it's alright.

Also, you'll adapt. When you're only in the uni about 12 hours a week (much less if you're doing a degree in ghey) and you've become accustomed to the maximum chill attitude of life with no real responsibility it'll become second nature.

As an aside, having dabbled heavily with both breeds, I always found the local girls more fun than the students so make sure you don't put all your 'eggs' in the one basket :-)

I can see the benefits of living with other students, but the vast majority of student 'digs' I have been to were horrible.

And I would become the worst house-mate ever if the house became a st-hole. I cannot stand cleaning up other peoples st.

As stated in my first post my current accommodation is a fking bargain.

But the big question is:

Will my chances of getting laid be more if I live with other students?

I too am going to uni. later this month as a mature student. I did consider moving into student accommodation but decided that I really couldn't face it - my excuse is that I'm more than twice the age of the OP. A really VERY mature student!

You will be missing out on 90% of the Uni' experience if you live off campus, get moved in, have some fun and then if you don't like it move back after the 1st year.

At 23 I may not seem very mature(as the people at Dirty Dicks can testify hehe)

But the thought of sharing a house with a bunch of 18 year old's who have just learnt to wipe their own arse makes me sick.

Waits for a flaming! biggrin

Fair point, I will look in to it.
