So why must I avoid the Speed 6?
Discussion
I am looking to buy a Cerbera in the next few weeks with a £23k budget (subject to selling or p/xing my Evo VI) and keep getting the advice that I should steer clear of the 4.0 Speed 6 and go for a 4.2 or 4.5.
On the face of it with the monster power I would be inclined to go for the 4.5 but being fairly clueless
when it comes to the differences I need some impartial advice about which is the one to go for and why.
Anyone able to enlighten me or point me in the right direction for info? I've seen the recent '4.2 or 4.5' thread but the sp 6 doesn't get much of a mention.
Whatever happens I will get the front light conversion done to match the Tuscan - I've been quoted £1100 plus VAT - must be worth it for increasing resale alone?
Seth.

Can, worms....open.
If it's been looked after or had an engine rebuild (fix) there is no reason to avoid a Speed Six. It's the same with all Cerbera's though, buy as newer one as you can afford with full service history and all the reciepts for work done.
You'll find it difficult to tell the difference between 4.2, 4.0 (Six) and 4.5's unless you're on track.

Sethlj, there is no reason to not go for a speed six. it is the most common engine in the TVR range and is the one TVR are pinning their future business on. You'll see many threads about 4.5's being under powered ie 360bhp instead of 420bhp, you'll see many threads about clutch problems witht he 4.2 and you'll see many threads about valve stretching in the Speed 6's. they all have their own problems. Only thing I would add is that when any engine or product is released by a manufacturer they need time to route out the relibility issues ie 1-2 years. How do they do this? With feedback form the customer ie me and you! I would tend to stear away from any product within it's first year of manufacture. your 23k budget would thus put ou in this S6 bracket of the first ones made. Best advice is to spend a few hours sifitng through all the threads on PH and do your homework well. Good luck!

Not really the case, the mod will not add one penny to the used value, and it may actually make it harder to sell, some people like it, but not everyone, and the cynical would say 'why has it been done, have you had a front end bump?'

Drive all three, I did and found that for me the speed six was best (it's more drivable everyday).
As said here buy the latest you can and read up on the info provided here and you can't go wrong.
These cars are the most incredible machines, but be aware that they will have little niggles. It's all part of the ownership experience.
Good luck with your search.

Wheres Nick (Ocean1). This is his playing field.
Really dont want to go through all this again! Just to say that my car has now passed 36000 miles, with the engine giving no problems whatsoever. Best advice is to try an S6, they are sufficiently different from the V8 cars to make this worthwile. 4.5 420bhp is well known rubbish. Will be selling my car soon....

I love to comment but because of rush please read the previous discussions with others from my member's profile. I had a 4.2 now have a 4.5. The later is faster in the higher range but 4.2 had more pleasure.

Agree about the bhp being alleged to be overstated. The cars however are not underpowered. I beg to differ regarding the price bracket. The 'car we want' is something like £23000-£27000 for 4.5, £19000-£21000 for 4.2 and £17000-£19000 for S6 - unless we are discussing newer models (2000-). The S6 is described to be the smoothest despite all the aggression. It's a Cerbera after all.
Cheers guys - sound advice.
I've seen a nice sp6 ('99 T with 13500 miles at £22k) that I may have a look at this w/e - but I still can't resist the draw of the V8 4.5. We'll see.
Are there any TVR club meets in the SW (Bristol would be good) in the next few weeks that I could gate crash to pick a few like minded brains?
OR
Are there any SW/Bristol based Cerbera owners that fancy showing off their sp6, 4.2 or 4.5 to me? I'll get the beers in!
