I was given £100 (I could add to this if I want to) by my grandad as a birthday present. I've decided that instead of being a typical student and spendng it all on beer , that I'd like to buy some form of art. I've been looking at local photographer's sunset photos that have been printed onto canvas and look good but at £130 for an A1 canvas print, I don't know whether ths is good value or not? I also haven't seen enough art to be able to decide what I want, so I'm putting it to the PH public to send me in the direction of more art I'm ideally looking for something around A1/A0 in size to fill the space I have designated for it!

buy a bunch of canvasses, some paints and paint your own masterpieces, one for you, one for your grandad. Id hate to denigrate photography but a printed canvas photo is just a big photo, at £100 its probably going to be some mass produced nonsense.

or enroll in an art class, you'd be amazed how good an charcoal sketch can look when its mounted up properly.

What sums it up for me is that you can fluke a good photo, you'll never fluke a good painting or sketch.

Do a search for "posters" and "art"
Then just click through the different subjects 'til something grabs your attention.
Old cars
Travel posters
Rustic landscapes
Couple of sailing ships with the obligatory three seagulls

I think with art its worth what people are willing to pay.

Try looking on deviantart, dont know what the prices are like but theres some wondefull stuff on there.

Does he have the same taste in art? what about buying him an easel and paints or a digital camera to make his own? I only suggest this as my mother is now becoming quite successful as a watercolour artist having taken this up in her retirement - she now has a studio at the bottom of the garden and this has the benefit of keeping her out of the way and everyone else happy.

Clearly says in my OP that I was given the money by my grandad The art is for me, not him

Buy one big canvas.

Go out on a proper student style bender.

Finish the night off with the obligatory kebab/pizza etc.

`Paint` the canvas.

Pass out.

Wake up to your new, unique and very personal piece of art!

I'd advise you to let it dry properly then spray it with some kind of lacquer or something. That way'll you give it some longevity plus prevent any nasty smells coming off it when it's hung above the radiator.

Not exactly "art" but I saw a photo print mounted, of an old Fiat 500 in black & white in front of a few tatty looking buildings.
Actually quite liked it but couldnt think where I could put it, it was only a tenner so think I might go back later tonight.

it actually looked a lot like this nicked from a photo thread on this site. except the car was side on.

Buy something you like looking at. Worst thing you could do is buy a piece because it could go up in value and then get bored of looking at it. I have one limited edition print of Schumacher driving through a wet bus stop chicane a very nice pic, don't really care if it increases in value im an F1 fan an enjoy looking at it.

I specialise in printing photos to canvas, and will happily do an A1 for £75 (I do a great deal of canvasses for PHers - use the 'search' feature for some of the threads)
