Hi Gavin...welcome to the forum.
There are one or two decent looking 400SEs on ebay and classifieds at the moment, and it would be well worth your while to take the time to have a look at as many as you can 'in the flesh'.
You will soon discover that there are huge variations in condition between what may seem to be similarly described and priced cars.
When the 400 Wedge is right, it is a magnificent sports car with near supercar performance, but the car needs maintaining properly to give of its best.
I would always look for 'history' with receipts for work done, unless you're willing to gamble and put a lot of work and money into the car.
Chassis condition should be number one on your check list, followed by a detailed history of what work has been done on the car in the past year or two...with RECEIPTS.
Any Wedge owner worth his salt will have these available to show you.
You will then find it easier to compare one car with another, and budget how much the real cost of the car is likely to be.
As for LPG, well the RV8 engines are pretty conventional, so I can't see why running on gas would affect them badly, but I'm sure some of the experts on here will be better able to advise.
Good luck with your future purchase, but do have a good look at a few different cars.

THANK YOU.i am looking at 350's on the whole, and have tested/looked at a couple already. however 390 and 400's appear to be out there in numbers too.....just wished they weren't scattered to the four winds !!! everything is a 2-hour trip (one way) but getting to them slowly but surely. again thanks for the advice !

Propane? I think I'd die laughing standing next to a wedge that smelled like a forklift.
I think he may be laughing a little longer... with petrol over here currently at just over a pound a litre and LPG only 44-50p a litre. There are loads of RV8 engines running LPG and it will run OK on single point injection but like most things you get good and bad installations. You need to see how it drives on the LPG, watch out for any back fires etc.
Been running LPG daily hack for the last 6 years with very few problems and saved an absolute fortune in fuel costs.
