Golf Mk4 Climatronic interior fans not cutting in correctly

I hope someone can help point me in the right direction. For a few weeks now my Mk4 Golf GTI 1.8T’s interior Climatronic has been doing some weird things.

When I first start the car the whole climatronic display unit flashes for a long while and then stops. The unit then fails to operate the air con or the heating. After a while of driving it sometimes fires back into life or the fan starts to run but at a very low speed and cuts in and out and makes some odd clicking noises.

I thought it may be due to low air con gas but I had it checked and the gas is fine. The Air con clutch throws in and out as expected.

I think it might be the fan unit as the noise comes from underneath the glove box and if I thump underneath there the fan sometimes comes back to live a bit.

I don’t have a diagnostic cable or software, maybe I should look at getting this as well?
