despatch or dispatch?

A German colleague just asked me what's the difference - and I don't really know! google isn't much help either

Same word, UK and US spelling I think.

I don't think it's that simple, I've seen both spellings from both countries

Both are correct to use in either country, but dispatch is used more frequently in the USA whereas we in Engerlandshire go for despatch.
