Could I have some cream with that please?
Discussion
Humble pie: It's quite a sour dish.
So there I was, sat inside an E92 M3 yesterday after requesting another demo drive. My first experience of the new V8 back in April wasn't a particularly pleasurable one and I came away from it with grave concerns o'er Garching's new M3. ‘Too big and cumbersome’ were the words that rattled around my head for days afterwards. Nice engine mind, but overall it felt too remote and not like I would expect an M3 to behave. Having said that, the test route was wholly unsuitable and it rained a lot, making effective progress without DSC epilepsy, rather difficult.
Fast-forward to yesterday though and things couldn't have been more different. Moreover, this particular car was fitted with the DCT 'box - a transmission I had dismissed as a gimmicky piece of techno wizardry for marketing executives to drone endlessly about with their mates at the wine bar. I couldn't have been more wrong though. This transmission is a masterpiece - and dare is say it - suits the M3 better than the manual 'box.
It's hard to believe coming from a Luddite like me, but the DCT equipped car was sensational. After a mixture of urban roundabouts and traffic lights, dual carriageway schleps and twisty b-roads, I came away convinced that duly specced, the DCT M3 really is all the car you could ever need.
I like it. A lot. Sadly I can’t afford one though; five months of disastrous Porsche ownership has seen to that. However, in time I can think of nothing else that I’d like to see on my drive.
ETA: Given the choice between one of these and a lightly used 997, I'd pick the Bimmer every time, and quite possibly over a blown hog too. It's that good!

And yet the M3 was/is the most disapointing car I've driven for a long time.
By that token, I'll pick the C63 on the basis that it surely couldn't be any worse than the 7 seri... sorry, M3.
On a serious note, can you provide more info on the steering feel and handling ability pls. Is it not a bit heavy for the really twisty stuff?By that token, I'll pick the C63 on the basis that it surely couldn't be any worse than the 7 seri... sorry, M3.

Nice. I quite fancy a TD in one of these as it the only M3 I've not tried (the old man has had one of every example at some stage, with repeat visits in some cases! Alas, he is now retired....).
I'd say it would fit the cruise / bruise dichotomy quite well, thirst notwithstanding (has it got a decent sized tank - like 60 litres plus btw?).
Anyway, I'm about £50k short of the necessary savings (and probably about same per year in terms of salary, natch) but I think it would suit the GP quite well (pretending to be a sensible four-seater owning member of society; pretending to be a sales rep etc.
).Not sure I'd buy freshly minted without a hefty discount and an awesome bit of lease / financing wizardry. But yes, very nice

The steering is accurate but does not have much feel. There are three different steering weights to select, but I generally leave mine in the lightest. The chassis is brilliant. Compliant and comfortable, but tremendous at keeping the wheels in contact with the road, and certainly good at changing direction. However, I would not pretend it is as nippy as an Elise or MX5.

I hate to point out the obvious as it's probably in your name, but why did you waste your time and that of the sales staff at the garage if you can't afford to buy one Edited by Great Pretender on Monday 14th September 12:03

I know we all like to dream, but you seem to have gone into 'fantasy world' here and wasted a lot of time and effort in doing so.

I parked the GT3 at home and walked into the dealership wearing a clown hat. For good measure I then sprayed the salesman in the face with a water pistol.
Numpty

For the rest of you, the depreciation on the M3 is too great to justify the expenditure. I was only given a breakdown of the figures after the test drive, in case anyone else was afraid I might have hurt the poor salesman...

Well, it's not rocket science that new M3's depreciate so you must have known that before going to the dealership.... or maybe you're a numpty

You said, "Sadly I can’t afford one though" which I read to mean... ummmm.... that you couldn't afford the car. It turns out that what you actually meant was that you were scared by the depreciation figures and decided against burdening yourself with more debt by buying a new car that depreciates heavily. A slightly different thing really....
The truth of the matter is that most of us can 'afford' the car we want, but choose not to strain the bank account too much. By putting down the minimum deposit and leaving a massive balloon payment at the end, pretty much anything's possible, just not necessarily attractive or sensible.

God help the people you employ/manage if you're as vindictive to them as you are to strangers on the internet.
Listen sunshine, you failed to explain your problem properly and I picked up on it. YOU are the one that started the name calling, not me.God help the people you employ/manage if you're as vindictive to them as you are to strangers on the internet.
Your last reply was a pretty pathetic attempt to brush your mistake under the carpet by calling me an idiot instead of doing what a man would do and just admitting that you failed to explain your predicament properly in the first place. Don't be too surprised when people more intelligent than you pick up on your mistakes.
The people that work for me do very nicely thank you and none of them demonstrate your clear inability to see simple facts and acknowledge them.
If you think I've been vindictive, you're a very thin skinned individual!

What gets me is the amount of aggressive ego-maniacs hell bent on proving a point to further their own end - despite having not one clue what they are talking about.

k do you think you are?!The point you are missing here 'sunshine' is that I didn't have to explain my predicament to anyone as that was not the point of my original post!
Instead, you decided to 'create' one for me and then got it totally wrong! Thanks for screwing up what could have otherwise been interesting discussion on the car at hand, not someones private affairs which you know nothing about or have any business with. If I wanted the car badly enough, I'd have bought it OK? As such I decided the outlay wasn't worth it given how much the car will depreciate versus my current car.
Jesus man, give up and let your ego cool down.
