I need to get some oil for an Audi TT (2003), and the manual states that it needs 0w-30 longlife oil conforming to VW spec blah blah and then lists all sorts of horror stories if I don't use the right oil.

I'd like to use the right oil for the job, but I'm buggered if I can find it anywhere except VW/Audi garages... where it costs stupid money and is inconvenient to get.

Halfords list these oils as suitable:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

But none of them are the same grade as the manual suggests.

Anyone know what they are talking about when it comes to oil and TTs? Any tips on where I can buy suitable top-up for sensible money?

I bought some of that in the end... cheers for the help guys. It's not the same grade (5w-30) but I have read that it's OK to mix. Still bloody expensive, but cheaper than Audi would ask for a litre!

Castrol do an Edge branded 0w-30. Personally I think a 5w-30 would be fine though

Is SLX the trade version of Edge?

Castrol edge in 5 litre bottles works for me and a good deal cheaper, have used Mobil 1 before that. Those prices seem expensive though, last time I bought some was around £40 for 5l.

Just keep an eye out for the codes. 503.1 (I think) was the one for my 225, there was some overhaul of the codes though so dont take that as gospel. 225 engines used to use different oil to 180s, I think the 504 is the new one for both. All 3 oils linked have that code.

Sorry to sneak in here, but would Mobil 1 be OK for top ups?

Mine also uses the long-life stuff (don't do as many miles as I used to) and have a couple of litres of Mobil 1 left from the last car.

Wouldn't want to risk damage for a couple of litres of oil.

Oops: forgot to add, it's not a TT but a S8 V10.
