Was at a dinner party and we started talking about this, I started thinking that it can't be nature, evolution would mean that people with a "gay" gene wouldn't breed with females and therefore over time the gene would demise.
Ended up in a decent conversation so thought I would bring it here.
By the end came up with the conclusion that we are all ( at least a large portion ) born with a "gay" gene and it lays dormant until events trigger it off. Ie both, nature and nurture.

I remember seeing something about a test done on gay rams. They disected them and found a porting of their brain was 10% smaller then in straight rams.
I really dont think you could condition a straight person to be gay. I know plenty of people who have no remote interest in cock, and would probably die before going that way.

Back then they could have just been nurtured into having a heterosexual relationship.. Being gay used to be illegal, remember.

It is a contentious issue, and in the main I'd say I was a nativist.
I would like to thank the OP(Original Poster) for the explanation(something that explains) of what 'Nature' and 'Nurture' mean, as I think most(The majority) of us would have been lost(unable to find one's way) without the handy reminder(a person or thing that reminds).

Romans, for example, had loads of gay sex. Totally normal.

I don't know either way to be honest. There was an intersting program about John Barrowman looking at why he was gay. It's a shame i can't remember what the outcome was. I think he was sure that it was genetic.
Personally I think so people have a pre-disposition to be gay and perhaps a certain factor in nurture can set it off?

What if it is naturally occurring but not genetic? Genes do not 100% dictate how someone is born: for example identical twins have identical genes but may have different birth marks, likewise the percentage of people born gay is just a biological roll of the dice.Ended up in a decent conversation so thought I would bring it here.

If it is genetic also remember that genes mutate quite often when a new child is conceived. Perhaps it is a mutation that happens quite often.
It will be interesting if this biology question is answered one day but it would be immoral to interfere with the mechanism.

Essentially. Julian Clary type benders have female pattern brains. This is due to a lack of testosterone present in the womb at a certain level. You could say that this was an environment, so was environmental. It isn't genetic. However, you are born like it. You can stigmatise it, punish it, but these people will feel happy in a role that their mind predisposes. Nothing wrong with it, it's totally natural.
Women are the reverse. Too much testosterone present in the womb gives masculinised brain....etc, etc.
What it doesn't account for is the Butch Gays or Feminine Lesbians. Whilst I can imagine that Butch Gays could have female pattern brains and it's merely roleplay, there is nothing that can convince me of the feminine lesbian scenario, rather than some sort of psychological mal-development or wound.
