That is true, and annoys me greatly. My work is full of people who claim to be engineers, one of them will then (seriously) brag about not being able to open their car bonnet.

We had a mattress king a few blocks away from here! What a downright insult to all monarchs in the world!

I've said this before - Software Engineers do follow engineering principles

Design
Implement
Install
Maintain
Decomission

So they are engineers in all but a bit of paper.

The fact that they have a piece of paper saying Scientist proves the paper naming is bks since they don't undertake research and experimentation on a daily basis either.

Truth is the modern world needs new ways to describe what people do, Artist/Engineer/Scientist just don't cut it now.

Sorry, I have to disagree with that statement. Artist, Engineer and Scientiest do cut it.

The problem as I see is that other descriptions such as Craftsman, Technician etc. are being diluted with some apparent plan to make the people look / sound more impressive to the consumer. If my car breaks down I want a Mechanic or Technician working on it not an Engineer.

A few years back I saw a couple of asian guys with a building company. The van had "You've had the cowboys, now get have the Indians" written on it!

PS - The use of proper nouns is deliberate.

No, this is called 'snobbery'.

Software engineering is a relatively new discipline compared to 'traditional' engineering. A lot of software engineers are self-taught. My grandfathers generation invented software engineering (in fact, one of them was a programmer for the US govt), I guess my generation is the first that is exposed to computers from a young age.

Have a little think about all the engineering problems that have been superseded and solved by software engineering.

Here's one close to our hearts: Carbs vs Injection.

While we (rightly so) have sentimental attachment to carbs, the ECU does the job better in just about every conceivable way.

Now why shouldn't the guy (or gal) who writes the software not call them self an engineer?

In fact, if we took away all the software, not a lot would work. Cars, mobile phones, your dishwasher, your house alarm, your digital wristwatch, I could go on.

Salute the fella, I share the OP's amusement at the advert. I also think that a few people need to chill out a bit about the whole engineer thing, it really does not matter.

Software Engineers are Engineers - the problem solving, and logical thought aspect of it is very similar.

Editted to point out that I am not a software engineer.
