When's the right time to sell my Z4MC.. advice please.
Discussion
I have had Z4MC since October 07 and still love the look of the car and the fantastic drive. Using it as a daily driver I now have 25k on the clock and I am concerned that if I keep piling on the miles by the time i come to sell it I will get a rough deal there don't seem to be that many high milers for sale.
So some advice would be appreciated please on the following options:
1) I sell the car end of this year early next with a likely 29k on the clock and im thinking of getting a 335i/330D Conv (any one know what the best month is to buy convertibles?)?
2) I keep the car till later next year and have 35-40k on the clock, will i lose allot more proportionally than a late 29k car with some BMW warranty left?
Cheers
Ben

In principle, I'm with Flimper and Soovy but I know where the OP is coming from.
I've done 8k miles in mine since picking it up at the start of April (an 08 car with 4k miles when I bought it). Having changed cars a little too frequently in the last couple of years, I love the Z4MC and it's a keeper. But if I keep using it this much, it'll be a 40k+ mile car by the time it's 3 years old. I'm sure it is perfectly capable of this sort of mileage, but its clear from the threads on here that prospective buyers for this sort of car (rightly or wrongly) generally prefer a low mileage.
My solution: run a second car (obviously!). For the last few months, this has been the old Merc which has been (almost) faultless, and on a classic policy with a full MOT and "caring" previous owner makes for a fairly cheap way to save a few thousand miles a year off the Z4MC.
I honestly don't know what car I would rather own than the Z4MC at that price point and age. Running a second car just helps to remind me how good it is. But if the OP genuinely wants a change, go for it. But if, like me, you're still loving it, then keep it and either accept the loss in value or get a daily snotter to share the load. You'll only regret it in a few months time if you get rid before you're ready.

I'm also a serial car buyer but having bought and sold cars whilst loosing a bunch of cash I've decided to hold onto my Z4MC. It's pretty awesome and does everything I need from a car. Doesn't stop me looking at the classifieds but I really can't see anything that attracts me for similiar money. E92 M3...maybe but that's about £17k ish to change. Not worth it IMO. I certainly think you'd be disappointed changing from a Z4M to a 330/335 Derv! A little too plain.
Keep it!

Why did you buy the ///M then if it wasn't for the pleasure of driving it? You have absolutely no worries about future resale value as only some 500 UK RHD cars were produced for both Roadsters & Coupes. This makes them one of the rarest cars in the world... What other car will do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds & hit 174 mph with the limiter removed? Only £250K+ specialist cars (& AMG models).I've done 8k miles in mine since picking it up at the start of April (an 08 car with 4k miles when I bought it). That all depends on what you want from it i had mine from new and it was a roadster though and put 38k miles on it.
I just chopped it in against a new car and think i got a good deal out of it only a few thousand less than a lot lower milage cars on the forecourt.
You buy to enjoy so use them and not worry about milage.

the simple answer to the OP's question is now, the older it gets and the more miles you put on it the less it will be worth - simple.
Unfortunately us as owners (me included) are so hung up on value we start to forget the reasons for buying such a car! In an ideal world you could buy a 50k sports car do 20000 miles a year in it and then sell it for what it cost you minus fuel, servicing etc... sadly the real world is very different to this fictional ideal world.
the key is to get the "value" out of the depreciation, i.e. use and enjoy it as much as possible, so in 3 years you can flog it for less than half what you paid, but you can look back and think damn i had some fun
you only live once and its bloody short...
I am in almost exactly the same position as the OP, mines a late 2007 car done 21k, i do 18k a year, its still got over a years warranty, is 6k miles off an Inspection 1... on paper now would be a good time to sell, which is exactly what i'm gonna try and do once my other "transport" is sorted.
i'm then gonna save up and few quid and buy a 911. However, i'm not giving it away as i'm not desperate for a 911, its a good car, if i don't get a good price for it i'll keep it another year do another 18k and try and get the £6000 of depreciation it'll no doubt cost me back as enjoyment.... well in my mind anyway

There is no doubt the older the car gets and the more mileage it has the less it will be worth.
However, I'd say it could be worth hanging onto for the following reasons:
- I suspect depreciation between 25k and 40k will not be as painful as many other cars due to the rarity of the Z4M
- It does cost you money everytime you change, so the less frequent the change the better
- The reason why there are not many higher mileage examples around is probably because no Z4M is more than 3 years old, give it a year or two and you will see a lot more 40k or more cars, but there will still only be 500 RHD.
And finally, the most important reason, if you love driving it then why change?

I think it's a shame people get so hung up on residuals. So you might lose £1-2k on the sale price because it's higher mileage than others. So you sell up and buy something that will depreciate more anyway because it's more common/rep-mobile and half the fun (if that!)?
Sell it when you get bored of it, or it becomes inpractical, or you can't afford it anymore....
Otherwise keep it!
Just touched 50k in mine. I'm not going to stop driving it, and there's nothing that I want instead. So don't worry, yours will always be worth more than mine!

Sixspeed, you hit the nail on the head. You buy these cars (Roadster or Coupe) to enjoy them. They cost more than your tart (sorry - girlfriend) to run but it's all subjective.. Your hobby could be skydiving, scuba-diving in the Maldives or even Fishing or Aeromodelling. They are all expensive but you still have to run a car - be it a Nissan Micra or a ///M. Sell it when you get bored of it, or it becomes inpractical, or you can't afford it anymore....

When you hit 50 years old, as I have, (one foot in the grave?) the insurance cost of running a Micra isn't much different to that of any "Supercar". The only downside is the £405 Road Tax.
That is why my Z4Mr must go.

This is obvious. The point is that the amount you lose by keeping your car for x more years and doing y more miles is less than buying a new car, keeping it for x years and doing y miles.
I'm keeping mine until I have the need for 4 seats, would love a 911 but they are just too damned expensive for a decent example with warranty. I have had mine for 8 months now, I drive it every day and am just as happy to drive it now as the first day I got it. It truly is a superb all rounder.
I'm a few hundred off 40k miles and i've had it a 51 weeks now..... started at 24k on clock....
Unless you want to up performance or change style why change? You will loose on a change - keep it and enjoy it.
BTW Mr Bull changing for roadtax.... mmmm maybe shouldn't have bought it to start with ...Copen might have benn more appropriate?
