When was the last successful full-on invasion of Britain?

1066 right?

Wrong, in 1688 the Dutch sailed a fleet four times larger than the Spanish Armada across the channel and invaded Britain.

However it was sort of hushed up so it is not generally appreciated.

That's a shame. I like those crazy Dutch and I wouldn't mind some of their genes thanks.
Maybe if they did invade Richard Hammond would be a couple inches taller.

Without wanting to piss on your chips too much, the Battle of Fishguard was the last military invasion, by Revolutionary France during the War of the First Coalition in February 1797. Crazy dutch french.

ETA I know you said 'full on' smile

The relatively recent issues in the six counties of Northern Ireland passed you by then? A fairly large contributary factor by all accounts

The arrival of William of Orange in England was effectively a coup arranged by the upper classes to ensure that a Catholic king was not returned to the throne. So, it was a kind of invasion but not a full of the "fighting on the beaches" type.

Most of the related fighting happened in Ireland. It was jolly accomodating of the Irish to provide the venue.

The Dutch did kick some serious English arse in the Raid on the Medway in 1667 though.

The Americans landed in Whitehaven* according to Coast. They all got drunk on the 'salvage' from a recent shipwreck and so the cunning plan was foiled - until 1942 when they were back in Blighty again.

Whitehaven Harbour history said:
In 1778 during the American war of Independence a ship captained by John Paul Jones attacked the port of Whitehaven. Jones was born in Scotland but apprenticed as a seamen in Whitehaven. During the attack 3 ships were destroyed in the harbour.

Interesting that the Dutch invaded us, and the net result was that we became the centre of world trade, taking over from the Dutch! hehe

Having said there seems to be a tide of modern Brits that seem to be invading Amsterdam every year for some reason?

The Belgians weren't up to speed on their offering at the time. It took them another 100 years to deliver a competitive package to the market place. They were certainly the market leaders from 1815 to 1945.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch...
