One thing after another........
Discussion
Okay, in addition to my inner CV boot woes, which by the way I have hopefully found a replacement for. I now have one front wheel stud spinning in the hub and the wheel nut is 3/4 of the way on. I don't want to split the wheel nut if I can help as a) the shoulder is almsot fully in the wheel and b) I don't think I can get a replacement here locally. So how does one remove a stuck nut on a spinning stud?
This is all made harder by access as I mounted the front splitter on the weekend and now my front clip only opens half way and I can't really access anything. Is that supposed to happen? If I'd known I don't think I would have bothered with the splitter, I'll have to modify or remove it, trouble is it's binding on the center underside where I've drilled through the front clip for the mountings.
This one thing after another is driving me to the point I am seriously considering just getting a different and more modern car.

I had a similar problem with closed nuts that were not deep enough and was almost going mad.
The fix is to use hex tool of the right size and spin the wheel and try to get this tool between the hub and
the head of the stud so it cannot move anymore. With the wheel on the hub you should be able to generate enough friction
so you can remove the nut. At least I was able to do that with me two nuts that had the problem
I have however no idea why the factory is not finding a way so these studs sit solidly in the hubs......................?????

My first move would be to get the front clip off and out of the way.
Get a 1" length of 1/4" bar and weld it the back of the stud. This should then allow you to remove the nut and wheel.
You will then, I believe, have to strip right down to the hub as I don't think you can replace the studs with the hub in situ.
If the stud is spinning then the hub itself may need replacing.
Don't despair over these problems after all the hub is a Ford item so it could happen to anyone.

You have officially been Ultima'ed, hello and welcome sir
This is possibly the final emotion left to experience whilst owning one of these cars
Julian,
these cars are not made for an easy life.
They are very much a love-hate relationship.
You hate them when things go wrong (which all too often) and absolutely love them when you are on the open road watching everything else disappear in your mirrors.
Stick with it, there is no other car quite like it.
Martin.

I have a splitter on my car and it still allows the opening of the front clip all the way???? why will yours only go half way ?? is it ground clearance....
if so roll car onto wood plank and open clip all the way..
have you got air tools???
I ask because if you remove all the other wheel nuts and then take up the play by pulling the wheel towards you, a quick buzz of the gun will get the nut off....
luckly most of the time the wheel stud is the one that needs replacing rather than the hub....so a ford stud will do the job as long as its long enough(please guys confirm its a ford stud???
hopefully you will be ok...

I have the front of the car raised and the splitter is not catching the ground, but the rear edge is hitting the spaceframe under the radiator cowl opening preventing it going up any further.I have a splitter on my car and it still allows the opening of the front clip all the way???? why will yours only go half way ?? is it ground clearance....

Yes I have air tools, that's what started all this! I tried removing all the other wheel nuts and Sod's law this last one is really on there. I think I'll get the MIG out tonight and weld something to the back of the stud to prevent it rotating. Fortunately replacement studs are available locally for me from Summit Racing ARP 100-7708 as long as it's the splines on the stud and not the hub.
Thanks,
good luckk if it is the hub you could always get a bigger splined bolt
if it is just bolt put some bearing lock on it when you put it in.....fit it without the wheel and just add spacers so you can do nut up tight... bolt will pull through
also word of warning...recheck that bolt in a couple of days as you might find its loose due to the bolt seating all the way under tension
