Packaging is useful if you intend on selling a fake or non-existent product in the future. Worth chucking £20 at it if you can sell a non-existent phone to the next mug for £250.

To be honest, im not really debating about whether it is a con or not - I am highlighting that fact that someone has found something, claiming ebay should do something about it right now, despite them probably getting millions of ads put up a day.

How is ebay supposed to know about it, if nobody has told them?

A fair percentage of them will be picked up through clever algorithm based searches, a few more from operators spotting it I guess.

The downside of a relatively free marketplace, there will always be grey areas.

I really can't see the issue.

I've seen people sell everything from ghosts in jars to wheelbarrows full of hardened cement.

As long as the description is accurate (which it is) then the only people doing something wrong are those bidding on it expecting to definately get an iPhone.

So, I see a scam and avoid it. You've got to be pretty stupid to put a £35.76 bid on a item that claims may have an iPhone in it. You know what they are worth, about £400 more than your bid, why would it have an iPhone in it?

Of course, this guy might be minted and giving a reward to people willing to take a small risk, but highly unlikely. Most sane people will steer clear, unless they are getting paid far too much money.

Given that he previously purchased an earpeice for an iPhone I'm guess he owns one and that it came in that box.

Fair play to him for the comedy value but I'm genuinely concerned that people are bidding on it.

In cases like this I tend to assume that the people bidding have no intention of paying, or will simply raise a dispute and get their money back if they aren't happy (which is extremely easy to do on Ebay these days).
