So putting aside any discussion on depreciation, performance, why would anyone buy a £30K Golf, etc I'm starting to think about whether, due to the driving that I typically do (based in London suburbs), it might be worth trading in an 07 plate B7 RS4 for a forthcoming new DSG-equipped Golf R.

Obviously, DSG is too much of an acquired taste for some so, assuming that it's something I can get with, the overriding concern would be the reliability of the Mechatronics unit within the DSG 'box. Seeing stories like this:

http://www.autoinsane.com/2009/08/28/news/recalls-...

does not fill one with confidence.

Putting a positive spin on it, the ten year warranty may indicate that this is a permanent fix but I would hazard a guess that it isn't.

Any views? Thanks in advance.

If you really want to downsize get a MKV R32 DSG wink ....

You`ll still have a nice sound, a nice box, and a load of pennies for petrol smile

But to answer your question, no, i wouldnt dream of it, especailly now the B7s values are sticking so well...

I'm sorry - I had a bit of a funny turn yesterday but I'm alright now. Must have been the dodgy tuna salad I ate on Monday.

I'd say that a Golf R20 with DSG would be ok for London driving. A serious step down from an RS4 V8 though! That must have been some really bad tuna...

Let me know if you want to actually go ahead with it - I'm after a V8. Is yours an Avant?

It wasn't that bad in the end (tuna). It is (an Avant).

Will let you know what I decide to do once the reviews start appearing - however, the DSG horror stories I've been reading are, by themsleves, enough to put me off buying any DSG-equipped car.

Why not hang on to the RS4 and buy the R in a years time for half the price?
