I would be really grateful to receive any useful advice / guidance on the unhappy plight I am now suffering as of this morning.

In March 2005, we bought a brand new Freelander v6 Sport including a three year warranty and three year servicing deal by the Land Rover garage we bought the car from. The warranty expired in March 2008 and in February 2009 we returned to our usual Land Rover garage for the scheduled service. At the service, the garage told us that we had a defective heater matrix and we duly paid them £800 for a replacement and a few other jobs.

On getting the car back, we were not entirely happy with it, so we went back to garage who said that they wouldn't even look at it unless we paid them. We thought this was a bit sharp as we had already paid for a service and the repairs bill and we felt the car wasn't running properly after the replacement heater matrix was fitted. The car appeared to have some slight hesitation under acceleration.

Recently, we noticed the car has been drinking coolant and makes a clanky rattle on start up. We decided to go back to our Land Rover garage and ask them to look at the car. They have advised us this morning that the cylinder liners are cracked and a replacement engine will be required at a cost of £5,000 (the engine has failed a block test). Furthermore, Land Rover themselves are refusing to stand by the car as it is now out of warranty.

As you can imagine, we are very unhappy about this situation. The car has only done 41,000 miles, it has been serviced regularly as per the manufacturers recommendations at a Land Rover garage and has never been driven hard.

While I understand that we are out of warranty, is there no protection afforded to us under consumer legislation ? I might add that the car was fine before the heater matrix and service work was carried out in February this year.

I read this yesterday on the bbc webpages, might be something useful in there. I wonder if the 1st example applies to cars too?

Sounds like they knackered your engine to me, maybe they didn't bleed the coolant system after fitting the new matrix?

Best of luck.
