is this the collar that is under the gear knob? If so - any tips on shifting it?

Looking down at the gear knob the collar turns clockwise to loosen, you may need a pair of grips if too tight. once collar is loose the gearknob will easily unscrew anticlockwise. Grip the collar as low as possible so any grip marks will be hidden by the gaitor on replacement.

Persevere - You need 2 wrenches, wrap cloth round the collar and the knob to protect them, grip the lower collargrip, and the knob with the wrenches, and unscrew the knob.
