C4.3 AMG

Just been offered one of the C class AMG 4.3 V8s is it true that parts and serviceing can only be done by AMG,next ? where is the nearest AMG dealer to Chelmsford Essex.

Any mercedes dealer can service AMG cars. AMG bespoke parts are expensive IE brakes. Make shore you check for rust.

Also check the gearbox. These cars eat them!

5810 hits on google for 'c43 gearbox problem'. All 722.6 gearboxes will give problems if the ATF is not changed regularly. It's probably more problematic in the C43 due to the amount of torque the engine is putting out.

Good summary. IIRC rightly Merc now have reverted to advising owners to change the fluid at 50,000 mile intervals. For several years they claimed their units were sealed for life. This was always disputed by indie and auto box specialists. Anyone I know changes ATF at 50,000 mile intervals or less.

Enjoyed mine, powerful and nimble, with a nice soundtrack. Not too bad on fuel if driven sensibly, about 25 MPG, and didn't have any problems with the gearbox, but did have the ATF changed at 100.000 km. Only problem was a very badly and lengthy diagnosis of faulty cam position sensor that made the car cut out on numerous occassions.

Excellent car. Watch the rust, make sure it isn't a write-off, check there's meat on the tyres and disks, that the wheels are clean and genuine and that the bumpers and sills are sound and genuine. It is a bit hit and miss with the gearbox. I've owned 2 - no problems with the 'boxes on those but the second one did occasionally do weird things...like refuse to change up...change the ATF as a precaution if I were you.
