As per the title when England declared war against germany it was against Germany not the Nazi's.

My understanding is that the Nazi's were a policitcal party in Germany.

Why do I only hear on BBC news reports when talking about the war that we went to war with the Nazi's or Nazi Garmany? It wasnt. It was with Germany. Why are they not telling the truth?

Are they doing this to tone down and not to offend current Germany or Germans?

Didn't we actually fight against the Nazi regime and not all Germans? as some Germans were Jews so therefore they werent exactly Hitlers best friends were they? also alot of other Germans didnt/wouldnt fight for the regime as they didnt believe in it. It was the Nazi party and its supporters who wanted to take over Europe, Invade Russia etc not the whole German population.

ETA: oh and it was Britain, not England and not all british people were for the invasion so I guess Allied Britain is a better description of who declared War on Nazi Germany.

Psh, like that matters.
I'm just sick of going into my poorly built anderson shelter. My house is stronger than this thing.
And don't get me started on not being allowed trouser turnups.

Only a country against another country can legally declare war. England cant and didnt declare war on the Nazi's.

No, we declared war on the country of Germany. When you declare war it has to be a country. It doesn't matter who's for it and who isn't. IMHO the vast majority of Germans supported Hitlers ideas to expand the fatherland and that Germany should be a major world power. They only started questioning it when they stopped winning.

And it wasn't Britain, it was the UK. Only it wasn't because at that point we had an empire and war was declared on behalf of the empire. There was no such thing as Allied Britain, The UK and her empire and commonwealth declared war on Germany independently on 1st Spetember 1939 as did France.

I correct my error, change England to UK for future reference.

Question still stands.... when the UK declared war on Germany it was against Germany not the Nazi party.

On 3rd September 1939 Neville Chamberlain said:
I am speaking to you from the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street.
This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note stating that, unless we hear from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.

You can imagine what a bitter blow it is to me that all my long struggle to win peace has failed. Yet I cannot believe that there is anything more or anything different that I could have done and that would have been more successful.

Up to the very last it would have been quite possible to have arranged a peaceful and honourable settlement between Germany and Poland, but Hitler would not have it. He had evidently made up his mind to attack Poland, whatever happened, and although he now says he put forward reasonable proposals which were rejected by the Poles, that is not a true statement.

The proposals were never shown to the Poles, nor to us, and though they were announced in a German broadcast on Thursday night, Hitler did not wait to hear comments on them but ordered his troops to cross the Polish frontier the next morning.

His action shows convincingly that there is no chance of expecting that this man will ever give up his practice of using force to gain his will. He can only be stopped by force.

We and France are today, in fulfilment of our obligations, going to the aid of Poland, who is so bravely resisting this wicked and unprovoked attack upon her people. We have a clear conscience - we have done all that any country could do to establish peace.

The situation in which no word given by Germany's ruler could be trusted, and no people or country could feel itself safe, has become intolerable. And now that we have resolved to finish it I know that you will play your part with calmness and courage.

At such a moment as this the assurances of support which we have received from the empire are a source of profound encouragement to us.

When I have finished speaking, certain detailed announcements will be made on behalf of the government. Give these your closest attention. The government have made plans under which it will be possible to carry on work of the nation in the days of stress and strain that may be ahead...

Now may God bless you all. May He defend the right. For it is evil things that we shall be fighting against - brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression and persecution - and against them I am certain that right will prevail.

only country to country can declare war. The UK are not at war with any other country. War against Terror, taliban, Afganistan etc has not been declared.

Complete nonsense. In Afghanistan and Iraq we are fighting in support of those countries governments against terrorists and insurgents. In WW2 we were fighting Germany, their elected government and people. Do not entertain the myth that the Nazis and Germans are separate entities at that point. Support was overwhelming.

Thats a very tough thing to call.

Plenty of 'ordinary' Germans joined the war to defend their country. Some were Nazis, others had little knowledge of Nazi policies and were simply defending their homeland. Plenty feared what the Russians would do if they reached Germany and signed up to help prevent this. Therefore I think its safe to say we were at war with Germany, as we were fighting many soldiers that were Germans, but not Nazis.

Imagine if the Cons are in power in 20 years when we are (hopefilly) out of Afghanistan. Should it be, as i think you are suggesting, Labour Britain who invaded to rid Afghanistan of the Taleban? But doesn't that suggest all Labour supporters and MP's at the time supported the war? IMO its always country vs country.

Correct. Thats the point why does the BBC continually now report that we were at war with the Nazis. I have sent a complaint to them asking.
