Replacement for MkV R32?
Discussion
First off - HI. I've been browsing these forums for a long time but never previously registered.
Anyway my predicament is that I currently have a 2006 MkV Golf R32 which I really love, however as always, I'm looking to better myself and 'move up'. I have narrowed my search down to 3 potential cars, one which is available at the moment, two which will be released next year:
Ford Focus RS
VW Scirocoo R
Audi RS3
I think top of my wish list would be the RS3 however its likely to be end of 2010 before available. I am wandering whether to get a Focus RS in the meantime then swap it for RS3 when available or whether to hold onto R32 until the Scirocco R is available Q1 2010. However I suspect it won't be quick enough for me and I will crave the RS3 when it comes out
What do you folks think, should I be patient and hold onto the R32 or switch back to Ford for a year then switch to RS3?
All thoughts and opinions appreciated.
Cheers

I have no real interest in cars such as a Porsche etc. I did think about an RS4 but decided it was too big for my needs so when heard the RS3 is coming, thought it was pretty much perfect. Yeah I understand it is going to be quite high priced but as its not released till another year or so, gives me plenty time to save up the difference
Hi OP,
My Boxster S went back to the finance company in Jan I had a similar dilemma...what next?. I ended up in a 2008 Mk5 R32. Once used to it (very different after 4 years in Porker) I loved the naturally aspirated (?) power delivery, 4 wheel drive/traction and actually the whole package/proposition.
It did get me thinking about more power but same format. So, 8 months later, I ended up in a B7 RS4. £30-36K wil get you a good low milage example and I guarantee you'll love it coming out of an R32.
I can't see me owning a 4 pot for a while - yes they are eco-friendly but we are slowly being buttf
ked as the car companies and government are slowly strangling the big engines and they know it's the only choice we'll have in years to come hence the £40K for a blown 2.0 TFSI aka RS3.
Get one while you can!!

What about a bit of forced induction on the R32? Pretty sure there is a twin turbo conversion, would probably be cheaper than a new car.
If you really want a new car then I'd be hesitant to get an RS for a year as I know the residuals are good at the mo but in a year, you could be looking at quite a hit on it plus the extra cost of the Audi. If this isn't a prob for you and you simply must change your car then I'd say Focus for a year then the RS3. Doubt the extra 10BHP in the rocco R will really make it that much more exciting than the R32.
p.s I wish I had your dilemma!

Thanks for the replies people. I don't 'have' to change the car, had it 18 months so would just like a change. I also have started feeling that the 'roco R won't give me enough extra power to be happy with and I'll be left wanting more.
I'm not advertising my car for sale but if by word of mouth someone wants it, I will sell it. My current thoughts are to keep it until next year and see what happens then.
I've no interest in a Porsche or TT, just not my kinda cars. I did think about an RS4 but having spoke to a few current owners, they have said stay clear as they have had nothing with problems, one of which has had 4 new sets of suspension!

I'd go with the above if you want a short term solution. There are some truely awesome professional R32 conversion kits that safely take the power to 400bhp. If you're patient, just make do and wait for the RS3. What an amazing machine that is going to be...
The Rocco R/S3 is a waste of time - in my opinion, however much they have tuned that 2.0T lump, its going to feel fairly insignificant compared to your V6 lump.

I've had an R32, S3 and now and RS4 for the past year and a half. I've had the front shocks replaced under warranty because of the DRC (Dynamic Ride Control)issue. It does seem that there is an problem with them, but as a result Audi are offering a 5-year 70'000 mile warranty.Definitely do not steer clear of the RS4. It's a fantastic car. The noise is amazing and it feels like the big brother of the R32. If you're concerned about the DRC issue, speak to Audi first and confirm that the shocks are covered. Loads of info on www.rs246.com if you search 'DRC.' As long as the shocks are covered, I'm not at all worried. I get a different hire car to play with for a few days. I've had one occurence of weeping shocks in 20000+ miles.

Yeah I'm going to sit tight and see what happens with the Golf/Scirocco R when they apppear. I think I may wait for the Audi RS3 to come out though. i still drool at the Focus RS when I see one though.
I'm still young so plenty time for an RS4 equivalent when I grow up a bit!
how about a current breed S4? V6 forced induction. I'm still young so plenty time for an RS4 equivalent when I grow up a bit!
Honestly the RS4 is not a big car, the RS6 is big!
RS3, will spark the old quattro debate... it will be quite likely a Haldex car if built on the A3 chassis and not a Torsen quattro like the RS's before it. Your R32 will be haldex as well, an uprated haldex controller as you probably know will improve matters.
Wondering who you have bee speaking to on the RS4, yes there have been DRC issues. I would wager in a few years time when warranties run out these cars will be on aftermarket suspension. Been for a few runs in one, a pal has had one for 2 years now. Yes its been back a few times but he doesnt want to let it go. And it does go!
Focus RS is impressive, seriously quick for a FWD car and very composed with it.
