Following on from the last thread I posted yesterday:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Well now the car has decided to fix itself. The alternator is charging, the battery is fine and no lights appearing on the dash.

What the hell is going on with my car? Is it because I shouted at it 'I'm trading you for a damn Porsche' that it decided not to be broken anymore?

Anybody had problems like this? Not sure whether to strip the alternator still or not. Could it be anything else (preferably easier to get to)?

Its all part of owning a supercar, they are like little kids sometimes & if it sees you have a bit of money left at the end of the month or it feels you have taken it for granted it will throw a little paddy. Surely thats no reason to get rid of it confused

Talking about cars fixing themselves, I had a problem with the Esprit a while back, the battery would drain after an hour, other times I could leave it 2 weeks & it would be fine. Something was shorting out. I had a look at all the earth connections & everything seemed fine. A few days later I opened the back up to check the oil & the spring switch for the alarm flew out, just like it was spat out, since then its been fine!

It really was like the car knew that switch was buggered so spat it out...now thats a car fixing its self biggrin

MAte

Mine was the same. Happens once the car gets hot or you idle for a long while, it charges fine when cold or on the move (eg motorway) but as soon as it gets hot, it all goes tits up again.
I made it all the way to le mans with no worries, but the last 30 mins sitting in traffic was the death of it.

Just pull it out and get it fixed.

Mine only went wrong twice. Once next to trafalgar square (I blocked central London) and once during a tube strike in the middle of Battersea Bridge in traffic. Again, I blocked central London (in rush hour).

Great cars biggrin

Ha, wouldn't suprise me if mine did end up doing something like that. It is a tempremental thing!

I very much doubt I'll end up selling. It winds me up some times, but evrytime I get back in it and drive it.... it just changes my mind.

That rebuild kits looks spot on. Think I may just rebuild the alternator anyway as its most likely going to be that and I dont want it to occur again. It spoilt a good run out over the Snake Pass in the peak district.

You southerners should really try and get up here some time and join me for a blast.

Would do if I had confidence that the car wasn't going to let me down. But going to still prbably strip the alternator before I go too far in it.

I used to live near Wilmslow as a student if its a pub somewhere there you're on about?

First thing I'd check is the alternator earth strap. It's a common problem on cars that haven't had a decent one fitted - a main dealer who shall remain nameless failed to spot this on my car twice (once leaving me stranded in Northern France with a young lady - at least the warranty covered the cost of the weekend).

If that's not it...not sure tbh. It might be worth getting someone to check the loom where it goes through the rear cabin bulkhead. Again, the same main dealer who shall remain nameless, failed to notice that mine hadn't had a grommet fitted correctly. It chafed and burnt out, very nearly taking the whole car with it. Just before this event it had exhibited a few odd electrical behaviours...

"Luckily" all of this happened in my first 6mths or so with the car. I was then introduced to a chap called Verdi (when equipping the car with a proper exhaust) who sorted out all niggles with the car (including spotting the cam timing was out!) and it never caused me any serious grief again. Just pure driving pleasure.

Fantastic cars. Find a good service agent you can trust and you will have great times with it.

I usually use Millbrooke in Sheffield who have been great. And haven't touched anything near the alternator since I've had the car so guessing its something thats just worn or naturally become damaged.

Will check that belt though. If it comes to it I'll take it to Millbrooke again, but if its something simple that I can do then would rather avoid paying to take it anywhere.
