Am I the only one, if so I am going to look bloody stupid, that gets annoyed with all the use of the word GATE for any type of conspiracy or story that emanates through the press..

Can PH explain to me why we have SPYGATE, CRASHGATE , etc etc....

I'm actually afraid to type Watergate in case this is a whoosh...but assuming the question was not rhetorical, it's lazy journalism and an easy way to suffix something to tag it as a scandal. EF spelling

It's utterly retarded to use it in any other context though, as it was the Watergate Hotel. Not the Water Hotel. It wasn't as if journalists at the time chose to tack "Gate" on the end of "Water" to invent a new word for scandal.

It was only one of the most profound events in American politics of the 20th century and which still has ramifications today.

If you want to find out about it in more details, I would recommend the Oscar winning feature film "All The President's Men" - or the book on which it was based.

The biography of John Dean (the White House lawyer who turned evidence against Nixon) is also very good as is the TV movie called "Blind Ambition"(starring Martin Sheen) based upon it.

But as per the OP's mini-rant, surely in modern parlance that film is about the Watergategate scandal?
