Hi,

I'm considering a 2nd hand ~2008 330i touring, which BMW claims gets 28 mpg urban and 38 combined mpg.

is this bull ? what do people actually get on urban and mixed driving ?

I have a 10 mile city to city commute and I get slightly above the combined mpg figure in my old petrol honda (that has figures of 28/42 = 35 combined.) I would like to still get this mpg, but is this realistic ???

cheers,

Gareth.

( please save me from buying a 330d/530d ! )

{ps is the touring too long-geared ? I have driven the 130i which was lovely but just too small - but the 130 has a larger final drive ratio - so the 330i will feel a lot slower ingear ?}

I had a loan 330i tourin for 2 days, in that two days I did 498 miles on one tank of fuel and it showed 38mpg.

I thought that was amazing, I would get 29mpg doing the same journey in my 335i touring, and I used to get 29mpg in the 535d touring before that.

I actually prefered it to the 335i in every respect, the NA engine was just much nicer, there was a sense of driver impact compared to the turbo in my car.

I think 32mpg average for someone who likes to drive it properly and does a short (ie 10 miles) run every day is about what to expect, I don't think a diesel would offer you anything better consumption wise, diesels hate short journeys, I have a 3.2 A6 avant as my daily driver and I was lent a 3.0tdi for a week, on the motorway the diesel gave 38mpg compared with the 32 I get from my petrol, round town however I was only getting 25mpg from the diesel and I get 26 from my petrol.

Aha ! Finally ! Something I am actually qualified to comment on !!

In short - believe it. I checked my OBC not 15 mins ago - average mph = 21 (ie urban) and average mpg = 29.4. Lovely smile

If you are going for it on a run you can easily get over 40 cloud9

PS - I have a 2008 330i manual saloon.

In all my excitement I just noticed this bit smile I had a 130 before the 330 and I didn't notice the different gearing to be honest so I wouldn't worry about that.

Around the doors we get 10 l/100km, in old money that's 29 mpg. On a run its easily 7 - 8 l/100km or 36-40mpg. This is over 15'000km. So yes its correct.

But if I drive it (above figures are from the wife) so how it should be driven, then......I get 20 mpg or less, but its much more fun. Its also an auto, so its better for a manual.

So ~30 around town for a 3L petrol is realistic ?!!!

this may be the car for me, I need ok mpg for 90% of the time when I'm plodding in traffic etc... I'm used to the current fuel bills...

and sod the mpg for the 10% (if I'm lucky) of lively driving.

Just need to convince myself to spend the extra on the ed car.
(or just buy an ancient 5(3/4)0i and spend the savings on petrol)

Interested to hear that the 330i didn;t feel that much slower that a 130i, bmw's own in-gear times would indicate otherwise, as does the different gearing and relative weights.

cheers !

Gareth.

Out of interest, my 05 E90 330iSE(auto) does 25/26 local and 33/34 on a run, which i think is pretty good for a 3.0 petrol auto.

So it seems the late '07 on ED cars do about 3-5mpg more than the 05/06/early 07 ones, which does make you wonder why you would pass up on the creamy straight 6 petrol for an oil burner when you can get 28-40mpg anyway.

I will go see the car tonight.

I am battling with the price, which is a little under book, but still 20K ! eek. I guess its still 13-14K less than list....

heart says buy it and sod the money, but head says you can buy a lot of petrol for a different car that costs only say 10-14K with all the leftover cash ! (i have also pondered a skoda vrs of all things - many nice cars for less than 10K, and will get less attention from the inner-city idiots) and think of the depreciation.... ~2.5-3k a year = 200 a month !

you can go nuts I guess if you think too hard about these things....

(i did test drive a 330d manual, the trip said 23-25ish with spirited b-road driving... but it was annoying driving around the turbo lag.)

When you sit in the BMW and feel the smooth power delivery, the quality etc etc you will know the difference. I had a Golf GTI before, and the 330i is a completely different class. I would go as far to say its my perfect car!

Gareth,

The ED 330i is a brilliant car. I'd be tempted to have one over a 330d. Hope it's a good one and let us know how you get on.

Price seems fair, you sure it is the 272bhp version??

And depreciation at £3k a year?? I would figure on £4k a year over 3 years, there will be facelifted 330i's with the new iDrive etc. about in good numbers by the time you want to move it on, so be realistic and expect £8k trade or £11k private.

And if you're really feeling stingy, stuff an LPG kit on it and effectively double your fuel consumption.
