Hi all, I've been having problems with the mini as of late. The ignition light remains lit when the engine is running, it just runs down the battery. I readjusted the fan belt and alternator and it isn't slipping. I've checked the battery earth and connections, they also seem fine.

I suspected a split wire to the alternator plug was the problem as it was hanging by about 3 threads! I cut a piece out and soldered in a new bit of wire. All is well, however I still have the same problem.

When the mini does start up it sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders. I suspect the alternator, what else could it be before I try a new alternator?

It is usually the alternator at fault when the ign light stays on.

Definitely the alternator (probably the diodes knackered which effectively stops it producing a charge). Should be fairly cheap to replace.

Definitely the alternator, the bulb in the ignition circuit provides resistance in the circuit and if it's lit the car is not charging.

Check all your alternator connections first but it sounds like you need to invest in a new one.
