Are wheels designed/made generally to take a certain type of inner tube valve or can you fit either? I was told that the car valve type may not fit my wheels as I run the other type (presta?)

If your wheels are designed for presta then shraeder-sp? (car type) will be too big for the valve stem to fit through the rim.
You can use presta tubes in schraeder rims though

Depending on what rim it is, you may be able to drill it (8mm) to fit schraeder tubes. As most pumps nowadays do both valves i'd leave it.

Just stick to presta tubes.

The most flexible solution is to run schraeder rims and carry presta spares, as then you can use any tube you can find and your spare tube will fit any of your mates' bikes.

I really don't like Presta valves!! Got them in my new bike and I've never had them before. When I clamped the pump on it to fill it up a bit for riding on the road the pump clam bent the head on the valve then the little screw broke off.

I was not happy as it took me forever to get the tyre off the rim! Then the pump did it to the spare tube as well!!

Sounds like a dodgy pump then; I've always used presta tubes with a number of pumps over the years and never had that happen to me...

Sounds the best solution, I was just being tight as I saw the other type in Tesco's for £1.82 a tube.

Wildfire - you can get a small brass adapter to convert presta to schrader fitting so you wont break the top of the presta valve off..normally about a quid from your LBS.

Ditto on hating presta. Mine bent too, then on unscrewing the cap off this morning the end broke off leaving me with the green gunge from the tube over my hands, but more importantly back to square one on the puncture front, but minus one brand new inner tube.

cock.
