I didn't think there was an Evo convertible. have a look at this http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=8
I think the Evo 1's were all 1987 cars and there for too early for the convertibles
Evo 2's and 3'd have a numbered plaque in the centre console also have the cam cover painted white with the M stripes.
Evo 3's again have the plaque in the centre console.
It might be that your car has the later, more powerful engine is in 1990/1991?.

EIII's do not have a numbered plaque, numbered plaques were only fitted to Evo II's, Cecotto's/Ravaglia's and Tour De Course (unique French special).Evo 3's again have the plaque in the centre console.

EIII plaque
EIII also had a standards black cam cover, but had red HTleads.
