I've always vaguely smiled every time I see Rob's posts which kind of contain a sort of vitriol regarding RWD and handling and poise and blah blah blah.

I've had a Polo for a year as my first car but it wasn't suitable for my needs. I needed something better on the motorway, plenty of toys yet still be reasonably practical.

What happened?

I drove a 1-series and it, within about 100 yards of the dealer, destroyed everything else I've ever driven. It demolishes everything in the class for feel, enjoyment and quality.

Apologies for ever smirking, Rob, because you're right and I've ended up putting my money where my mouth is! (It'll leave me destitute, but that's the point, right!? Or as BMW would say, 'Joy'!)

Am I officially a PH member now I own a Beemer? wink

I joked to a 330-owning friend that I could join her nobody-lets-me-out-of-junctions-anymore club.

Step 2: buy a cap/t-shirt/other branded crap.

I always swore blind that i would never own a BMW because i hated them! I was offered a Z3m as a straight swap for my Elise & not looked back since! I currently have a 328 coupe which is great.

Which 1 series is it?

I don't rate them at all. IMO look ugly, poor drving position, wasn't comfortable on the motorway, wasn't built that well, hated the indicator style , seats were shocking (se) however handling and brakes were decent smile

All depends on your car history tbh. Glad you're happy with it though. Which engine is it?

Sports seats which are great, seating position is ace. 118d which is just about the best thing I can get with my age/insurance etc. Golfs, A3s, S40s etc. are natural competitors and by comparison are dire.

Ahh, I was given the 118i. I couldn't get on with the seating position tbh, the SE seats started giving me a back ache frown

Golf + A3 will both be dire as they are the same tongue out Would have thought the S40 would be excellent on the motorway....Volvo are renowned for their car seats. However the interior does look a bit ikea - ish hehe

The 1 series is the best all round drivers car in the BMW range at the moment I reckon.
Sure the M cars do lots of things better, but if you want a car that does everything the little 1er is it.

I have owned a few BMWs, from E30 325i's, a couple of E46 M3s one of which was a CSL, a 335i sport, a 535d sport and a 120d M-Sport, and I honestly do think that out of all those the little 1 series is the best.

You can gobble up 1000 miles in one sitting in complete comfort, actually far more comfy than the 535d sport was, and then when you want to get on the twisties you have a go kart to play with. My chipped 120d M-Sport could loose the 535d on the back roads, I then had a S4 and that was even further behind it.

The space in it is also really usable, far better than the 3 series, if you buy the hatch version.

All in all I love the 1 series, it reminds me of the E30 and that is why I think it is so much fun, it feels chuckable and raw but in a grown up, where as the 3 series has got bloated, the 1 series is just about the right size still, it feels a lot lighter than it actually is.

I sold my SMG M3 today, it will be sadly missed, I love 'em!!

But I have bought another 1er, went for a 123d, will get it remapped and will enjoy it in a different way, yeah I could have bought another 335i for the same money, but they're no where near as fun. wink

My thinking goes that in a couple of years when I'm older, have more no claims and have had a few pay rises then a 123d coupe will come into play... Pretty much all I could ever want in a 'normal' car.

to be fair the normal seats are rubbish. However the sport seats IMO are the best car seats i've ever had, even better than the sport seats in my 986.

I've had my 120d 5 door coming up 3 years, looking to swap it for a 120d Coupe in the next month. That will be the 4th 1 series we have bought between me and the better half.

Same here, the one series seats are superb, best I have had in any car, they are the same as the 3 series sport seats. They beat the 5 series sport seats, the Recaros in the Audi S cars, even the seats in my old mans 730d sport and the ones in his old S Class which were comfort seats, they really are that good.
