Stolen/Recovered

Rare Mitsubishi recovered thanks to online networking

A number of Aston Martins were recovered recently after an observant member of the public spotted them racing through the Blackwall Tunnel without number plates.

Police closed the exit of the tunnel and the thieves were apprehended.

A stolen car was recovered last night thanks to a nice bit of networking amongst online car communities.

A rather distinctive Mitsubishi Eclipse - a rare car anyway - was stolen by a thief posing as a potential buyer on Saturday. Stripped of its rear wing and stickers, it was still a rare enough car to stand out from the crowd though.

Eclipse

Knowing that, members of the GTOUK forums pushed the info around many forums on the web, paying particular attention to cruise sites.

And they came up trumps! Cruisers in Carlisle spotted the car yesterday evening - complete with false plates - and alerted police as they followed from a distance. A number of police cars descended on the stolen car and apprehended the driver.

Because it's a black and white replica of the car made famous in the fast and the furious perhaps.

It was amazing to get the right result so soon after my mate's car was stolen, and a huge credit to all the car enthusiasts from GTOs and EVOs down to Saxos and Fiestas!!!!

The details of the car have ended up on at least 15 car forums that I know of, probably more as people from clubs have posted on their local cruise sites.

You can imagine my suprise when I read my daily email from Piston Heads, only to see a link to the GTOUK club of which I'm a member, and a story about my mates car on it! Wow!

Benno.
Surely YOUR preference doesn't matter. Just because you wouldn't want Shanes car it doesn't make it OK for someone else to take it. I've seen this car in action and trust me it is quick and i mean really quick. It looks good and stands out in a crowd.
Surely the important thing is that people from all the differnt car communities got together from the Nova/Corsa boys through truck and bus drivers onto the big BHP boys. TOGETHER we got Shanes car back and that is what matters isn't it.
I for one can't wait to see Shane at the next Northern meet stood with his car.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it is not the same as yours. Although I am not defending or attacking anyone's choice of vehicle I feel the above comment is of little value to anyone. I suggest comments like the above be left for the schoolyard not for the likes of this site/ forum.

Odd choice of car to nick, as there's only 30 in the country (according to someone above me) it would be a nightmare to sell on.
Never mind, just shows most car enthusiasts can club together if the need arises (remember the meet for the kid with cancer?)

Fair's fair, a comment along the lines of "each to their own, it's not my cup of tea and I can't see for the life of me why anyone would want to steal such a distinctive car" might have resulted in less flaming, but considering the amount of attention this story has recieved on the internet forums who helped track down and recover the car, a comment like the first was maybe not the best thought out. This coupled with the amount of time and effort put into finding the thieving scumbag who did this, I feel it was maybe expected to get such a response.

Perhaps if I told you the latest news I have heard through the "grapevine" is that when this guy was last released from jail, the first thing he did was steal a brand new Scooby from a UK dealership. He has been linked to numerous other car thefts, aswell as other crimes, including attempted burglary, handling stolen goods and credit card fraud. Then throw into the mixer the thousands of pounds in cash he was alleged to have in the centre console of the car when he was first spotted driving it by a girl he picked up. Where did he get this? The mind boggles.

The point is, he had seen this car and made up his mind he was going to steal it, drive it, pose in it, even re-spray it (one of the last places he went before being caught was a spray bay where he ordered a £5000 holographic spray job). What if he had a fetish for stealing TVRs. Do you think a TVR owner would have seen their car again. Or Porshes, I doubt that he would have been recognised.

Each to their own I guess.......

Benno, sorry for interrupt in here, but I read a message from you saying that an aircon for a 993 or 964 is about 1500-2000ish...

Do you know where I can get one for a 964? I bought the car when I was living in the UK without a/c which was fine, but now that I leave in Spain it is unbearable!

Thanks!
