Opinions on Subaru Legacy B4 purchase
Discussion
Evening all!
I have been after a Subaru Legacy B4 for a while and have finally seen and driven one that I like. It's a 2001 black manual with half leather and FSH with 43k miles on it.
Only thing is now I'm getting twitchy about the running costs (should have thought about them before I test drove it really shouldn't I??).
I've done a fair bit of research and can't seem to find that they have any common faults. Do any owners on here have any opinions on what the likely things are to go wrong and if there are known issues with them?
I have a good mechanic and will do plugs, oil etc myself but I'm not keen on having any massive bills for things like gearbox, turbos etc.
Opinions very welcome...
Cheers

I had to spend a lot of money getting the centre diff fixed on my GTB. I'm not sure it's a 'common' problem, but it certainly isn't unique either.
Both autos and manuals can suffer from the same symptoms (for very different reasons). The fix for an auto is just moderately expensive
Other than that it's been fine and not as thirsty as some people make out (but does need to run on Super of course).

No common problems that I can think of - if anything does go wrong with the turbo system it can take a lot to track down with all the vacuum hoses etc, but they're usually pretty good if they haven't been messed with.
Most common fault (as with all Subarus) is the MAF sensor, but thats not a huge deal. Much more likely to have problems if its running an aftermarket air filter.
Agreed on not being as thirsty as some like like to proclaim, I average around 27mpg in mixed use and 30-33 while making good progress on the open road.
