Myself, the missus and three children will be spending the weekend in a tent on an otherwise deserted island with only a few palm trees and possibly random Colombian drug smugglers for company.

I like that kind of stuff but the others aren't terribly enthusiastic, especially when I said we would have to catch our own fish for dinner and brush our teeth with coconut water.

Is this going to be a disaster?

Any camping with kids tips?

So you're doing something you want to do, and dragging the rest of the family along despite them really not wanting to go. And they'll be stuck there. With nowhere to go, nobody else to talk to/play with/whinge at. And they're going to have to catch their own dinner every day and presumably crap in a hole on the beach.

No, I can't see any way this could possibly go wrong...

ETA: Tips for camping with kids - yes, ours love it. Because we take them to campsites with play areas, swimming pools, games rooms, and other kids wink

I am sure you will have a fantastic time.

Your kids will remember it forever but their grudge will fade over the years, when they are about 45yo, so not all bad.

Your wife will bring it up at dinner parties, BBQ's, shopping trips, in bed, via text messages, Xmas cards "Happy Christmas darling, it will be a great Christmas with you. X Unlike that god awful camping trip you dragged me too. Bastid"

So yes, you will enjoy it but you will pay for it FOREVER!

hehe

P.S Go to Butlins instead.

Sounds brilliant.

But this is a bloke point of view. I reckon your missus will scoop the kids up by day 3 and head home.

Leaving you to enjoy the rest of the holiday in peace.

wink

It's only one night as an experiment!

FFS.

I have some misgivings.

hehe Don't get me wrong, it sounds fantastic and the thought of a few nights on a desert island with some mates and several crates of beer is nothing short of heaven.

Really not sure I'd take the wife and kids though smile

The road to the place where you get a boat to the islands is pretty hairy too:

Sounds good to me, but like you I struggle to find friends or family who share my enthusiasm for a few nights under canvas hence rarely do it anymore.

I'd happily spend a week in a tent in the middle of nowhere somewhere nice.

It was terrific!!

The drive there was fantastic. 4x4 through mud, across a river, along a so-called 'road' that was until recently just a bulldozer track though the rainforest. They are sadly 'improving' it so in a few years the area will be spoilt as regular cars will have access.

The island was like a bounty advert, white sand, turquoise water, surrounded by a coral reef, the size of a large football pitch, lots of coconut trees. A few local indians live there so we bought lobster and beer from them.

Kids made campfires, collected coconuts, hunted crabs, swam, played, hide and seek, shat happily in the sea...

Wife made tea over a campfire.

Slept in a hammock under stars.

Total cost of the weekend, less than a Little Chef meal.

Family want to go again next week!

Cool. Just the right age for enjoying that kind of thing, give it a few years and they'll resent every moment spent with youhehe
