Sprinting is a good way to start, with the bonus that there are no other cars out there at the same time to hit.

You want the cheapest way of seeing if the thrills and spills of racing are for you? Define thrills, spills, cheap and racing...
It might be that you have no interest in 'tintops' and want to play single seaters. In which case the cheapest way is finding an arrive and drive car for hire with the 750MC or Monoposto or similar.
It might be that you have no interest in single seaters, and want to play with 'tintops', in which case an arrive and drive drive could be found with the CSCC, BRSCC, 750MC - almost every racing club really!!
It might be that 'cars' are not your thing. You might want to play motorbikes. Or lawnmowers. In which case the cheapest way to 'see if you like it' would be to hire one for an event - this will almost certainly be cheaper than buying a vehicle, preparing it for a race to a standard that will give you a decent impression, and then trying to sell it afterwards.
Do you want to race against other cars, or would you be happy with sprints and/or hillclimbs? No other cars to hit, but it's not quite racing either, and you don't get much time in the car in the competitive environment.
How much is cheap? Are you hoping for a couple of hundred pounds, or are you thinking cheap along the lines of a couple of grand? Or maybe even £10k? Or perhaps £100k is cheap to you??!!
The cheapest form of going racing in a car that is quick enough to excite you is a single seater championship like Formula 4 or Monoposto. You won't be be near the front of course, but you will have a car that is genuinely quick. Racing in, say, a Punto championship (if one even exists) might be slightly cheaper in terms of absolute numbers, but at the end of the day you are still racing a gutless hatchback, so pound/mph is very very low. It may be that you are happy to spend a couple of hundred quid per race more for a single seater and be near the back of the grid (but perhaps near the front of your class) than saving a few cinema tickets worth of money to be in the top 10 with a hatchback.
Each to their own, but without more info from you I don't think you'll get much more than very, very vague answers filled with generalisations.
