Saw this advertised somewhere and had a go. The questions seem mostly irrelevant to me though, I certainly don't know half of them.

I failed. Got 50%. Oh well, good job I am leaving next year.

Some of those questions were downright stupid, I dont give a flying st when women were granted the right to divorce, what has that got to do with whether an immigrant will be a valuable resource whilst living in the UK.

The one about attending a hospital without a GP's letter only in an emergency - they reckon it's false.

I sat this test last year and got 100% - but then I had done some swotting .

It is a very good idea because up until a few years ago, an immigrant did not have to be aware of ANY aspects of British language, culture or living when applying for "naturalisation".

What is the alternative - apart from an outright ban on immigrants (which may appeal to some hard liners)?

The questions cover different areas of British life - the law, culture, sport, entertaining, history, traditions etc.

Like any educative process, not all aspects of the topics covered may be relative to your own personal life.

The fact that so many British people know so little about their own country and its institutions is not an indictment of the test, but more an indictment of the British education system.

Q14. 'You can attend a hospital without a GP's letter only in the case of an emergency.'

They say true, however anyone can attend a "Minor Injuries Unit" at your local hospital without GP referral. Good to know the Government knows about this.

I think the problem is that none of us have been coached to pass this exam. I'm sure (like A levels and GCSEs), once you've received the relevant training (and know how the answers work, regardless of the truth) - it's easy!
