98 XJ8 Front Hub

Anyone have an exploded diagram of a nearside Front Hub assembly for a 98 xj8?

Something is seriously wrong with mine. I jacked the car up and the whole wheel moved laterally and a horrendous grinding noise. Something seems to have fallen off...and as par for the course I can't get the ruddy caliper retaining bolts off. (I have the caliper off, not the cast iron guide thing).

Failed wheel bearing, very common.

The ABS rotor can actually grind on the hub and bits of the bearing cage can come out if its been driven like that for any length of time.

Hi TT and Gareth,

2nd hand hub and bearings from ebay looks the cheapest option. It's defo the bearings gone.

Do I need to compress the spring before I take off the entire hub assembly? It doesn't look like it, but I want to double check before I lose a limb or something!

I'd wait for TT to give you a reliable answer but it doesn't look like it from those diagrams. The removal guide also makes no mention of a spring compressor.

So your fingers should be safe yet.

It just looks like 3 bolts, but I do want to make sure!!

Diagram is a bit inconclusive!! And having seen the amount of tooling required to change a bearing....well, slightly outside of my garage toolset!!

You`ll never get the ABS ring off without the correct tool and they often strip the thread off the hub when they do move.The damper will keep the spring in place when the upright assembly is removed, unless the spring is broken.

Damper does indeed keep the spring in, so your safe to remove the hub assy without the special compressor.

Your will need either a big hammer (mind the ball joint rubbers) or a ball joint separator.

After spending a pleasant afternoon being rained on, nearly losing an eye due to an errant brake caliber clip, I've now conceded defeat.

Could not get the ball joints off for love nor money, despite liberal dosings of large hammer.

Have ordered replacement (2nd hand) hub assembly and new brake disks (have spare new pads), and is now booked into local garage for it all to be fitted in a quarter of the time and properly.


It's always the way, good intentions, but lack of really proper equipment will always thwart the diy'er eventually!
