I've just driven a Cayenne S for the first time.
What a terrific motor car !
Quick, terrific handling, firm of steering and ride, yet yielding and compliant. A better car for UK country roads in the winter would be hard to find.
I love my C4, but the extra visibility offered by seeing over hedges and getting earlier view of sight lines is fantastic!
I have only one reservation. The image.
It is not a subtle car, and with even regular 4x4's attracting negative social comment from some quarters, how would the imperious looking Cayenne be received by an increasingly ragged and spiteful culture?
Or should I stop caring about what the prols think and buy one anyway? Let them eat cake...

I drove one for a week last year and loved it too it was good fun but lacked the kick in the arse that the turbo had. over a week I returned a real world 8mpg!
That was however using it to its full potentual I prefer my C4S and would only concider a cyenne turbo but you may have a point about image and 4x4's 8 mpg???

The voice of reason ! You are quite right of course, and if I am honest the Cayenne appeals only because it is a new toy and I have'nt had one before.
It would make more sense to use bangernomics, and the culture of envy is beginning to pee me off. Perhaps I'll just buy a big Landie Defender...an ex army one in camo..with a gun !
The Cayenne does drive nicely, for sure. You'll need that 450-hp with a vehicle that weighs 5200 pounds, which is almost a TVR 2500 more in weight than my 944, and around a "ton" more than the 928.
Since the 928 eats rear rubber like candy, I suspect a 5200-pound vehicle will eat rubber very very quickly, especially since it's performance rubber, and because the vehicle begs to be driven like a "sports car".
The rubber that comes on the car, by the way, is next to useless in the snow, even with 4WD. Several people have gotten stuck in the parking lot, while they watch others in "lesser cars" just drive away, and there have been some real complaints. The complaints stem from the fact that Porsche sends the Cayenne out with high speed rubber, and not with a tire design that gives good traction in the snow. I would suspect the high performance winter rubber to last even less time than the "road rubber" will.
Having said that, sure, I'd love to see one in the driveway, but I'd like some other 4WD cars too.
I think a high performance "truck" is kind of an odd concept from the onset. Fun, yes! But when you toss around 5200 pounds, you need a lot of motor, it uses a lot of gas, and it will eat rubber like there is no tomorrow. If you drive it like an old lady trying to save gas and rubber, then you may as well get something else. Wretched excess? Perhaps.

I've had mine for 6 weeks now, done 1,500 miles and sits proudly alongside my 996 C2.
I really is a cracking everyday machine.
If you can afford one alongside your C4S, go for it.
If you like it, get it, if you don't don't!!
I've never really cared about image or kudos value. I'm just as happy driving my Forester Turbo with 330 bhp....... now there's a car!!!! (****ing ugly though,,, the Forester I mean!!)
