Tyres - What do YOU do?
Discussion
So, uh, hi
It's tyre replacement time again. In the past, I've always replaced the Michelin Pilot Sport's on my '98 Ghibli with ... Michelin Pilot Sports. However, I am hearing good things about some Falkens which are about two thirds of the price. Now, I've never been one to want to scrimp on things as important as tyres, but it seems to me that if they are as good as I'm lead to believe, it would be silly to fit the Michelins just because that's what came with the car.
I would add I've nearly always fitted Michelins anyway since my Mi16 days, they were massive improvements over whatever rubbish was on that car before, but that's the extent of my "performance" car history, until this Ghibli. It's mostly used in the dry, but does see wet/greasy roads now and again. I'm boring and haven't taken it on track (yet) but if I do will probably get some different wheels/tyres for that purpose, so that's not a consideration.
Does anyone have experience of Falken tyres? Anyone got any other suggestions? Anyone know why Michelins are so goddamn expensive?
....

Hi
I have just gone onto a site www.tyresearch.co.uk as I am looking for tyres for someone and they seem to be quite good I have found the tyres we wanted for £100 less (for 4) than other garages and they are a well known tyre we are buying too.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, but unfortunately it doesn't work ....I might not have been clear in my OP (I can witter on a bit) but I'm not so fussed about where to find tyre X for the cheapest, as I know some very good places locally and on the intertubes, it's more of a question about the Falken tyres in particular, and peoples' general experiences when moving away from the manufacturer's standard tyres on a performance car.

I run Toyo Proxes on mine and find them superb compared to both the pilots that were on it from new, and corsa's that were the obvious choice as an alternative. A couple of the other guys with 3200's have tried and liked Toyo's also. Good combination of wet/dry grip, durability, appealing tread pattern and price.
I've also run the toyos on Ghibli's including my last one (97 gt) that I kept for almost 20k miles, felt better in the wet than Michelins, but the fronts wore out noticeably quicker and were a little more prone to under steer when pushing on (followed by oooohhhhhh s
t over steer in the wet)
