Chocolate Labrador (6 month old)
Discussion
Not my usual posting but due to the wide PH audience I thought I'd try my luck.
We bought a male choc Labrador (Stan) in May. He was born 23rd March. Wife was a part time childminder so was at home all day. Then unfortunately she had to stop. We managed fine until recently and now she has had to go back into full time employment. We thought our furry family member would be OK, well in actual fact he is OK, however it seems so cruel to be keeping him locked up from 9-6 every day them again every night when we go bed which is fairly early. He just isn't getting the attention he deserves and he is a very clever and good boy. He is fully house trained etc. Is there anybody out there who could help me rehome him? It's breaking our hearts. We'd ideally like him to go to someone who can be with him as much as possible and want him as a family member. I am prepared to travel, I just want to find a good home for him.
He is KC registered and we have all his papers and he is up to date with all of his jabs.
Thanks Mike

sorry, I don't know anyone wanting a dog but have you considered getting another dog to keep him company?
My girlfriend is in the house while I work, but prior to her moving in I left my two dogs alone from 8am - 5pm Mon - Friday.
As long as you give him plenty of time and attention when you get back home, I don't see the problem.
Or pay a professional dog walker to come to your house on a daily basis and give him a walk midday.

If you really want to keep him find a "creche" - we had a similar problem to you but with 2 Bassett Hounds and they really don't like left being alone however phoning around some local kennels it didn't take long to find one that would take them on a day basis.
The dog(s) go in the morning, get to run around with other dogs which helps their socialisation and keeps them exercised and then you go and pick them up after work. Even with the somewhat restrictive opening times of the place we found we were able to drop the dogs off at 8:00am and pick them up at 6:00pm.

Sorry to hear this.
Doggy day care is a better option + lots of walks when you are around. Rehoming can be a bit traumatic for the dog and they can take a while to settle down.
No other reasons for wanting to get rid of him?
If you do rehome then go with one of the specialist lab rescues. I think Lab Rescue NW will be your local one. http://www.homealabrador.net/

We have a collie/ GSD cross and both work full time. I'm lucky enough to work close enough to home that i can go and walk her for around 40 mins every lunch time, she has a good 30-40 mins before i go to work and another 40 - 1 hour when i get home. We leave the radio on for her during the day and she's one of the happiest most contented dogs i know. Working full time doesn't mean you can't keep your dog it just means you have to make a bit more of an effort. If neither of you work close to home use a dog walking service and just make sure he gets lots of attention and walks when you are at home.
Another dog to keep him company is NOT the answer.
You can however make it work if you really want to.
A daily dog walker (doesn't have to be a professional dog walker, just someone you trust - retired or semi retired neighbour?)
Lavish him with attention when you get in and take him for a walk yourself.
Alternatively do a search for lab rescue.

Where are you based mate? I know my parents are looking for a young lab and are not having much luck with the rescues places as they want one fairly young!
Edit: I see your from Manchester, that might be to far as they are down by London.

He should be ok left most of the day as long as he gets proper attention and walks whenyour in.
Failing that, we may be able to help with re-homing as we've been looking for a dog for awhile now.
Just got to see what the boss says.

We've also got a chocolate lab (cadbury just turned 6yrs), we've been thinking about getting another chocolate as a companionfor his run into old age.
Problem is we live in the Northeast of Scotland, plus I haven't told the wife, but if you think its an option we can discuss further.

We've had 2 choc labs now (one after the other) and, up until the kids came along and we had child care in the house during the day, each was alone at home for most of the day. Someone would always pop in at lunch to let them out for a walk.
We too were initially guilty for this. However, we discovered that when we ourselves were off ill or at home unexpectedly, the dogs actually just slept most of the day.

I've a Lab and recently been spending a lot of time at home... and all he does is sleep. He gets walked in the morning, evening and lunchtime, by dogwalker, but other than that he just sleeps. We too were initially guilty for this. We've got a Springer Spaniel at home, only 4years old and he is as yampy and energetic as a moronic big brother contestant.
However, during the daytime all he wants to do is sleep, his most active hours are 1600-2200.
As long as you let your dog have a slash and a dump in the morning and when you get back in from work, they'll probably be ok on their own during the daytime

Balls ! I've found this to work wonderfully with more than 1 pairs of dogs. They're pack animals after all and enjoy company. As others have said dogs usually sleep most of the day and as long as you give them lost of love and attention when you are there they're fine IME.
Don't get rid of the poor fella you WILL regret it, I have had Labs all my life and they love to sleep, they sleep all day and all night, just make sure when you are around you give him lots of attention, he will be perfectly ok. Like you say its not nice to have then in the house alone but he will be fine with it.
Oh and yes, another dog would be good for him to keep him company, although they will just both sleep

Most dogs are fine with a pattern as you describe. We have 2 dogs (whippet and whippet/bedlington terrier) and they just seem to sleep all day. Right now, I'm at home and I haven't seen them today because they're in the sitting room dossing! I don't suppose they'd do anything differently if I wasn't at home. They get let out in the morning, walked when my parents get back from work and then get to play and be cuddled during the evening before bed. It does help that we have lots of land for them to run about together when they are let out though I suppose.....
