I think it depends what you're after, the BMW isn't as good as the Audi inside IMO. But then the BMW will feel more involving.

I'm after a comfortable auto, diesel estate car, which has a little oooomph and can be driven miles and still get a bit of mpg.

Basically, wanting something newer than my current 530d. And I am (randomly) guessing that the A6 would be more involving that it, even if the A6 isn't as involving as the newer 5's.

Have tried both. Went for the A6 3.0tdi (saloon) in the end.

Both good cars.

Personally for long mileage on UK roads, I find the A6 SE the best balance - slightly softer ride and runs on 17"s. The S-line on 18"s and 19"s I found too firm. Quattro is no benefit 9 days out of 10 - but on those winter days or slippery road conditions, it's very reassuring.

The BMW was just too firm for lots of mileage for me.

If it involved lots of French/German/Swiss roads then it would be a very tough call, but I would probably go for the Audi still (just). Have just returned from 4 weeks, 5600km around Europe I remain extremely happy with it. Oodles of space, very balanced and excellent build quality.

I'm lucky in having a good Audi dealer locally who have been very obliging post purchase and have gone out of their way a number of times for no financial benefit. Struggled to find a good BMW experience locally.

Edit to say:
On the 5600km I did a trip calculator reset at the beginning, and carrying 2 up + 100kg luggage, I got 38.1mpg, including many many mountain roads, and I don't hang around...

And in 23000 miles since purchase, I'm on the same tyres as purchase, with about 7000-10000 left in them.

I have a 530d Msport touring having had an A4&A4 avant previously. If I had the choice again it would be the A6 purely for the quattro.

Although i do love the idrive setup.

What he said +

Both have similar power + performance but the BMW will have the edge. BMW's interior isnt all that and car feels some how cheaper. But Rear wheel drive is just more rewarding, if you like that sort of thing. Many of my customers think they feel skittish and scary, but I'd prefer to be power sliding off of my favorite local roundabouts on my way from home from work.

Fairplay and thanks for all the other comments.

The wife and I do though have other vehicles we can get our involving/rewarding/fun driving done in, so those aspect aren't at the top of the list for the Estate member of our fleet smile

Have just been through exactly the same choice. (Also included the Merc E class)

Went for the Audi purely on the basis that we preferred the idea of the quattro set up, and the fact that we have had two A4 3.0Tdi which have both been very good.

I suppose it came down to the fact that we found a sensible Audi dealer who was happy to talk to us and do a deal over the phone, the BMW guy wouldnt even talk numbers till he had physically seen our p/ex and couldnt arrange a test drive in a 535d.

Happy with the Audi, but I am sure the BMW is a great car.

read you other thread as well. I live in rural Grampian and we do get hit with snow very regular our E61 530d msport avant is wifes car, i drive an 20 year old quattro so that will become the winter car as i dont expect the BMW to even move. Considering gettign an older S6 avant for me/family in the winter but then again why didnt i just by a new S6 or an A6 3.0TDi avant in the first place... Comparing the two back to back wife feels safer in the quattro setup and that really is why i would choose another one again. The BMW can be really engaging on a dry/summers day blast but i found it too prohibative in the wet, but i have had 5 quattros in a row so get accustomed to the ability to just drive how i want. OK the arse of the car doesnt go everywhere but it is quick and safe. If it wanted a fun car i would be looking for a fun car, a little chuckable thing.

I did have a shot of a 535d and i must say its a very quick car, felt faster than the 3.0tdi A4 quattro i tried a few days before hand.

I am guessing this is a family wagon given the size choices?

I have 3 kids and a dog. We took the 5 from North Scotland to La Rochelle in the summer covered 3800 miles in 3 weeks. It really is superb tourer, but then again so was the A6. I find the A6 more utilitarian it just does everything well where as the BMW if anything has the RWD bias and personally i find the Msport suspension better than the current Sline setup.

From the sound of it you want the A6 so just go for it mate, excellent cars and the interior is where you will spend most of your time so the BMW loses there.

Having also had both (530d albeit), but seeing that you seem to have a tacit penchant for the A6 - then you will have no regrets. The 535d does have one of the worlds best diesel engines, especially as it gets up-graded to 300-bhp in 2010. But for looks and comfort A6 is trump.

As others have said BMW M-sport anything unless it is an M3/M5, rides very poorly indeed.

Also, if you care, BMeer is on its last legs with an new model sometime next year. A6 is good for at least another 2-3 years having just been face-lifted.

Good luck with your A6.

Thanks all. Went to Audi main dealer today and saw (just delivered, had been ordered in or dealer stock ) an A6 Avant, 3.0tdi, Sline, Le mans, in phantom black. A few extras as well.

They're prepping it and I'm taking 'the boss' over tomorrow to see what she thinks.

If she gives it the nod, we'll take it on. Will let you know.

A6 Le Mans 3.0tdi is a good choice, but I am biased!

Well, the deed is done.

Test drove, briefly yesterday and the car is spot on (I'll give more thoughts when I've owned her a while - really looking forward to driving it).

Going on hols this weekend, so will collect her when we get back in a few weeks.

Phantom Black, A6 Avant 3,0tdi, s-line, Le mans. It's black leather with alacantara. Privacy glass, Comms pack high, AMI (ipod thingy), Bose. And maybe a couple of other bits (let's face it these cars are reasonably specc'd anyway and this one was well, available and saved us waiting until next year).

I'll definitely fire up photos once I get back from hols and have picked it up. Only had phone camera with me yesterday and was too excited driving it smile

Was half-tempted by a S4 Avant they had in. But it was white (not my cuppa) and boot probably too small for my needs (3 dogs etc). And although I respect the documented performance, I'm happier with the more frugal MPG of the 3.0tdi.

The one we chose is Le mans spec, but is not carrying the le mans badges - this doesn't bother me.
I'd have not bothered with privacy glass had we ordered it from scratch. But it doesn't look too 'rapper' so I'm ok with that. It has chrome tops to the door handles too - I assume all new ones have this? I.e. it's not something one specs? Again, it looks ok.

However i have 3 kids and a dog. The A4 will be too small, we could barely get the pushchair in the boot of that! The A6 it much more utilitarian, never had an issue fitting things in the boot!

None of my audis have had the privacy glass treatment but the current 530 does. My positives for it; keep the kids/ dogs cool, generally keeps a black car a lot cooler in summer, hides what is in the back/ boot and cuts out a lot of glare when driving at night without sacrificing vision. I dont know why but it always seems to look more apt on an estate/avant

It's arrived *drool*.

I collected her yesterday and said a fond farewell to my scrappage old volvo estate and bmw 530d touring (03 plate).

Obviously still very early days and only just getting started with faffing around with all the sat nav/mmi/computer settings etc. But initial impressions are very good.

I'll get photos up asap. But it was raining when I collected her yesterday and she's dirty now frown

Sounds like you've bought a really nice spec that should hold its money pretty well; we're seeing a strong demand for those and have done for some time.
