Next year my brother is getting married. Now as much as we would love to go to vegas, I just don't think there is the budget for it. We are thinking of a narrow boat along the Thames up windsor way. Going to be around April time. Any suggestions if this is a do able idea/ good fun or works out as expensive as going abroad?

Yeah it can be pretty good fun but just try and stick to wide open areas of the canal system as you're abit of a sitting duck in a 40'-60' boat with a max speed of 4 knots. Having said that, you won't be going anywhere near the Grand Union Canal (especially the Southall/Hayes stretch).

Depending on where you go, it's quite possible that you could do a pub crawl and moor up behind some pubs along your way. Locks are sometimes good fun too.

The canal system around Braunston (oddly enough the grand union still or the oxford canal system) is very nice indeed but abit of a trek if you plan to hire locally! Much more peaceful than around here though.

You'll struggle with that. Most canal boat/ Thames Cruiser companies won't take single-sex groups.

Having said that if you can find a firm who is willing to do the hire it's a top laugh.

We rented a convertible (kid you not - a big handle retracted the roof) Thames Cruiser that could sleep six (three couples) and spent an excellent week getting to Oxford and back from Reading. Fun. Relaxing. Goring is a great spot to moor up for the night.

I wouldn't combine one of these with any serious drinking, mind. The potential for things to go tragically wrong is a bit too likely...

Edited for stupidity.

Vegas is cheap in April. Eastern Europe? Vilnius is a laugh and peso's really.

Or keep it old skool and hit the 'dam with a passport, 300 notes and a pack of 12.

Provisionally I think can hire one of our RAF boats from RAF Benson, £100 a day for a 34 ft cruiser.

Do fancy europe or something, budget is really around £400-500 for my bro.

Done plenty of stag weekends, 2 of which were on boats on the Thames (one was mine) and those 2 were the best I have been on. Sitting on a boat, taking turns at vaguely steering it whilst gently getting frazzled - plan something so you can be near a town for the evenings curry/pub/club and jobs a goodun.

How many on the trip? Ive still got the details from our fake stag do to Vilnius last year and i dont think it cost that much. Nice apartment too which slept 6 easily.

Plus, you get to do the beer bike.

If it is going to be a small group of sensible people, then it would be a marvelleous evening... even if it wasn't my idea of a stag do.

If it is a larger group then unless you are a bunch of teetotallers, I wouldn't do it.

If everyone gets drunk, then the temptation to chuck your brother into the river might be too much to resist. After all, what would be funnier?

In April, the real threat is hypothermia. In cold water you can die in as little as 4 minutes.

Another vote for Latvia and hotel X-Dream...It really is all you need.

When you finally leave the place and they give you a lift into town, find the Victory pub. Get to the basement, and pay about 150 lats for the stag to have some fun and a laugh for the rest of the party.

Cheers
