Can anyone give any more advice,is it possible to remove the cover plate underneath the aluminium post without having to remove the wing mirror from the car.

Sorry......but no. Told you it was a bugger frown.

Also once you have the bottom off you will see just a cylindrical tube with no great area to hold. Can you not get the nut on from above and then somehow wedge the tube (with say a large screwdriver) to get the nut tightened/glued - I used some long nose pliers with limited success. I wasn't too worried about some damage to the black plastic casing as it is hidden by the painted cover.
