I've got a 2.5TDi quattro with 18" replica RS4 wheels.

Just had Vredestein tyres fitted but been to 2 places to have wheels balanced and I am still experiencing judder at around 70mph?

The first garage fitted and balanced the fronts, then the second garage just balanced them (and charged the earth!!) and said they were well out and had to add a lot of weight!

Could it be the back wheels that are juddering a bit with it being 4WD?

Anybody experienced anything similar?

Cheers,

Dave

If the tyres are a lot out they are either seconds, or they haven't been fitted properly. The only other possibility is that you have a bent wheel but they would show up when trying to balance it.

Either way, modern balance machines are so good you should have no vibration once the job is done right. I would go back to the people that fitted the tyres and insist they redo the job, for free.

Have you checked your wheel tyre combo actually runs true & round? You'd be surprised how much a balanced wheel can be out of true & still balance! Yet on the road you'll get a vibration.

True and Round? Well, I guess not. I mean that's what you pay them to balance the wheel for don't you? Don't get me wrong there isn't masses of judder but at 70mph it is noticable. It's seems perfect all the way up to that.
It might be worth getting that back ones balances as well, seeing what that's like and if it's the same, shot them on the front (providing they balance those correctly!)

I hope it's not the wheels as I've just had the faces re-furb'd. And yes, the judder was there before they were done!! wink

Edited to add that the judder isn't necessarily through the steering wheel it's more the car that judders slightly. The MOT did mention frt ARB bushes showing come wear but I can't logically see it being that.

It sounds like its the back wheels. If its the front it will shake the steering to bit. If its the back it will shake the car. Take a ride in the back, you will feel where its coming from.

It could also be things like propshaft uj's or worn suspesion components, especially if its the whole car that shudders.

Who do you think I am - Hightower from Police Academy!!?? smile

Sorry couldn't resist.

I agree I think its the backs too! Going to put the spare on the 2 back corners first and see what that's like. If it still does it when I get home at weekend I'll get missus to drive it and sit it the back.

I have Vredstein Ultrac Sessantas on my A6 Quattro, so much better than the orininal fit Pirelli Pzero Rossos. BMW now fit the ultrac sessantas in the factory to some models (so I am told by a beemer owner)
