Not sure i have this right in my head! My ps3, xbox and sky hd go into my amp. They all have various levels of video they send from SD to HD on the Sky and SD bitorrents to Blue Ray on the PS3.....so do i just set the amp to pass the signal straight through to the TV (panny G10) or should i set it to something particualr (i assume, if the later i set it to 1080p?)

You probably have three scalers, one in each source, one in the amp and one in TV, you will prefer one to the others, just try them out and see, there are no shortcuts here, we're sat at a computer in a totall different place and cannot see what your eyes tell you!!

Unless you are using relatively high end electronics ito 'front end' (i.e. top end Blu-ray player) and/or an expensive AV amp/receiver then most higher end sets' internal scalers are at least as good as those in supporting ancillaries so the normal advice is set the disc source to an 'auto' setting so as to output via HDMI the native resolution and let the set do the rest.

So theres no danger of me getting a less than 1080p picture on the TV because something at some point in the process will upscale? I'm not fussed about which device upscales best...as long as it gets done!

The TV will rescale (where necessary) everything.

For example, I still utilise an early Sony DVD player as one source which interfaces via a 10m scart lead: it's a technical recipe for nothing remotely spectacular and yet, even 480i from (fundamentally well produced) NTSC import discs resolves to a subjectively impressive standard.

It's all in the panel.

ok....so anything that arrives at the TV not at 1080p will be sorted anyway.

You won't get 1080p out of a Sky box anyway, only 720p or 1080i

thats what i mean...i'm just checking that its ok to send 1080i from the sky, etc and just let the 1080p tv sort it out.

actually...watching it now and BBC1 SD on my TV looks almost HD. Certainly lots better than my old CRT.

very happy smile
