a TV licence for listening to the radio? I'm currently at University and havn't yet bought a TV licence. I havn't watched any live TV although I have used iPlayer to watch the F1 which I believe is allowed. I would like to use iPlayer to listen to Radio 1 () and would like to know if anyone could help me clear up the rules on this. Thankyou

You can have a TV as long as it is not used to recieve TV signals. Thus you could quite legally use a TV to play an Xbox/PS3/Wii on, or use it to watch pre-recorded material such as DVDs.

No, no, no. If the TV is capable of receiving a broadcast, meaning that it either has a tuner in it - digital or analogue - or it's connected to a satellite/cable box, then you must have a license regardless of whether or not it's plugged into an aerial. A TV without a built-in tuner is hard to find, usually 50"+ jobs too so hardly the sort of thing a student is going to have in halls.

Incorrect - see http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/index.jsp... You need a licence to watch LIVE broadcasts only ("as they're being shown on TV" as the link says. That's it.

IIRC there used to be an exemption of some sorts for people in further education along the lines of, if your at uni and your parents have a licence you dont need one, no doubt I've got myself muddled or labour have got rid of the exemption

It's OK we have a normal 21" TV with a PS2 in the lounge for watching DVDs. I have a freeview box and cable stashed away in my room which IS NOT plugged in. It's safely locked in my cuboard for when we buy a TV licence.

Since we have to buy a TV licence for each of our rooms!!! Is it legal to buy a licence for our kitchen/lounge area and split the cost between us so then we can have at least a TV between us?. This also brings the cost from about £150 each to about £23 each. Thanks for your help and advice so far it's much appreciated.
