I've just given a £10 tip

I did that once, in Bar38 in west india quay. Not out of choice, the scum barman slipped it onto the bill for 2 drinks when I wasn't looking and I payed by card - the machines just ask for your PIN and don't show the amount, and I didn't check as I was a bit drunk.
£24 for a JD & Coke and pint of Guinness.

In New York I remember finding 2 x $1 bills in my pocket and realised I tipped the guy who took my luggage a couple of $20's (from the other pocket).
Damn American money
Yep it always gets me too, all the notes are exactly the same size.Damn American money
Being, now, in the industry that "relies" on tips - I can tell you that your largess would have been greatly appreciated. Especially if it was above the 10% norm. So, don't feel a mug. Think that you've given someone on half your hourly rate a right good "bonus" for which they'll be very grateful and decidedly chuffed.
Unless it was less than 10% in which case, they'll appreciate it anyway but will take it as a sign that things weren't 100% right for you.
In this country, unless - as a waiter/waitress - you're an wannabe amerkin, all tips are regarding as such and are to be gratefull for, not expected.
PS: We once had a tip (wot we share amongst all staff for that "shift") of 5p... that was hard to split 6 ways. By the same token, we had a £40 tip on a £80 bill once. That is still spoken about in reverential tones!

Thats another good point.I disagree with sharing tips and regularly ask before i tip in restaurants.
If someone has provided a sterling service and im tipping them, i want them to receive it, not to be distributed amongst everyone working their, benefiting the ignorant ****s who receive no tips but still receive a share.
I tip generously most of the time, but only through being impatient
When the bill comes I can't be bothered to wait for the card machines, so generally just put down the nearest number in notes and if that is under 10%, then I bump up to the next note value that I have in my wallet.
Saves having pockets of change too

As previously stated, if it was more than 10% of the bill, then well done; you've made a 'waitperson' (f
king PC terminology) very happy.
My eldest daughter worked as a waitress whilst at college. She made more from tips than she did from her wages.
I usually tip around 10-15% if the service has been good, 5-10% if it was OK, and nothing if it was poor. If it was really bad, then I usually try to have a quiet word with the manager to let him know he's got a re-training opportunity.
