Pulled at 101.2mph.....and let off!!!!!

Went a little drive tonight, haven't been out in the Boxster since the weekend, so thought I'd go for a wee drive. Found myself on a totally empty (and pitch black!) stretch of motorway, so pushed on for a few seconds. A few minutes later (had already backed off to 70mph by this point) I saw a set of lights approach quickly behind. I was just thinking to myself "he's fairly tanking it" when he slows behind me...uh oh I thought, and right enough 10 secs later...blue flashes....sheeeeite!
Got into the back of the car, was asked what speed I thought I was doing, I said about 85-90 but wasn't really watching the speedo.
He got me to look at a display on the dash (vascar unit)...said 101.2mph
At this point I physically started to shake thinking that there was nothing more to do or say, I was screwed, good-bye license.
He asked if I had any part of my driving license, and fortunately had my photocard, so handed it over.
He asked me what I did, so told him, he asked if I drive for work...said yes, as I do have to visit client sites. Started to shake more, and said that I'll might loose my job over this...possibly a bit of an exaggeration, but it certainly wouldn't go down well.
He said I should be careful, it's been raining and the roads are covered in all sorts of grit.
GAVE ME BACK MY LICENSE AND SAID I COULD GO!!!!!!!!!
FANTASTIC. I thoroughly thanked him, and he replied with "It's not about speeding, it's about road safety".
What an incredibly good attitude for a policeman to have.
So crawled home and promised the wife not to do that kind of speed again. I definitely HAVE learnt my lesson.
I believe I must have met the most reasonable cop in the land.

Thats a good result, only hope if I get pulled for such speeds I recieve similar treatment.
As you said, I think the right attitude and a certain amount of respect to the BiB can help significantly in these situations. Also respect where respects due to the guys givng due regard to the overall circumstnaces, something a camera alone can never do, bring back more policemen I say

Back in June (i think) I was pulled on the M4 inbetween Cardiff and Swansea doing 102mph in the Chim.
Same thing happened really, put me in the back of their car, showed me the reading on the VASCAR and told me that if this went to court then I'd be looking at a ban, but that he was going to deal with it by means of a fixed penalty. Phew!! I was so bloody relieved.
He said that I wasn't driving like an idiot, I was indicating and leaving plenty of room, but I was just going to fast.
When the passenger cop was writing the ticket he said (in a deep valley's acent) "Jaguar is it?" and the driver cop said "Jaguar? It's a F
king TVR boy!!" 
Then I crawled home at 69mph all the way with my girlfriend giving me a "you know you've done wrong" sort of look!
It's good that the cops still exercise some common sense and discretion in these situations.

Wrong? Nope. Less lucky, yes. I think everyone generally appreciates that if they are travelling >100mph and get caught then there is a high probability that they will be banned.
At the end of the day, the police are there to enforce the law. Applying the law sensibly has to be applauded. If I got stopped for 80mph on a clear road with good visibility and fined then I'd feel hard done by. At 100mph I'm not so sure (with the current laws as they are in the UK). At 100mph you are purposefully speeding, it's not like you've accidentally slip over the 70mph speed limit. What you rather have - every police officer only warning people who exceed the speed limit by 30mph?
You cannot have it both ways. Either accept the that different police offices will react in different ways to a situation, or remove the ability for offices to make a judgement call.

I just think its wrong due to the inconsistancy. Yes I would expect a ban for over 100, and yes I would expect an officer to enforce it.
My reason being I know of an IAM who was stopped for 98.5 on an empty motorway and the officer insisted his driving was perfect, curtious etc, but due to the excessive speed he HAD to be given 3 points and £60 fine.
So was this person drving @ 101.2 MORE safely than an IAM member @ 98.5?

Nope... we should EXPECT the worst, and then be thankful if we get some discretion, not the other way round.

... and, just to add some balance to this discussion, I was doing 85-87 (100% sure of this) on the M5 in my Chimaera, got pulled (vascar in a marked car on the hard shoulder), admitted to 85mph, they said I was doing 101.1 and WOULDN'T give me an FPN because "even if we deduct 10% it still means your speed was over 90"
Had to go to court and had 6 points and a big fine.

Do I detect a note of jealousy in the air off some people? I'm sure you wouldn't be moaning if it was the other way round.
I think I got let off (with a FPN - doing 102) because I was honest, polite, put my hands up straight away, and knew I'd done wrong.
Blueyes, do you think maybe the coppers that stopped you were a bit hard on you because they knew you were lying to them when you said 85mph and they had proof that you were doing more? They're not idiots you know!
Edited to say: by the way, I've had a couple of unfair tickets in my time too, but never from a cop, just scameras. Had a 2 week ban 2 years ago for doing 42 in a 30! Bit harsh I thought. Also, just got one for 77 on a dual carrigeway.
Just pointing out that it's nice when we do get a break sometimes.

No, I would still think its wrong if I was let off doing >100mph and the next person was given 6 points and a fine for doing <100mph.
Its not doing the police/governement/scamera partnerships any favours if officers are not punishing someone they catch doing over 100mph.
