Channel 4: A survival programme on now. At first I was looking forward to this - like a Ray Mears thing. But all that Ed Wardle does is end up crying and snivelling, being generally useless and saying how much he misses people. A pretty poor choice then!

Can someone give this depressing useless cringing wimp a slap please?

....the dream was better than the mosquito biting reality...hehe

I just love the stories throughout recent history of downed hard men in the forces who had to escape being lost in the wild after a helicopter crash...end up half baked, starved, infected & desperate only to be led to civilisation by a native who wonders what all the crying is about...

Certainly shows how useless the average European is when dropped in the natural world ...hehe

In the SAS you`ll be expected to eat anything that moves, worms & grubs if needed..& you`ll god damn like it...hehe

It wasn't quite the program I was expecting to be honest.

I had it on series record as I hoped it would be a decent watch, but it was all a bit disappointing really.

I actually found it annoying because it was all so desperately negative and pointless. In the time that Ed Wardle had finished blubbing over how lonely he was, Ray Mears would have cooked a slap-up meal and built a 4-bedroom detached house!

I reckon the cast of Big Brother would have been equally useless but at least more entertaining - and I'd never thought I'd say that!

I missed the first two but it seemed to me he had one armed tied behind his back by not being able to hunt large game.I am sure the lack of food more than anything else led to him quitting.

Both Ray and Bear always bang on about the importance of keeping yourself well fed as it helps with your morale which seems to be the number one thing when it comes to surviving on your own in the wilds.

Sounds like it was a healthy dose of "reality" into "reality" tv - the Ray Mears stuff is an escapist fantasy that none of us could or would want to live up to.

In that they'd taken a person quite unsuited to the task and then filmed him out of his depth as a 'social experiment', yes. The other end of that slope is Dr Mengele.

For most of us yes, but if my job or hobby involved the possibility of being stranded in the Outback or wherever, then a few basic skills could save my life.

Being converse - I suppose that for the millions of Africans who live in poverty in mud huts, the idea of 'escapist fantasy' is living in an over-priced brick box in Peckham, shopping for convenience food in a supermarket and going to work on the Tube...

The point is rather that he thought he did want to do it, and was up to the task - hence the dose of reality for us all.

Ah right!

Still, 30 minutes would have been enough to prove 'it's not as easy as you think'.

I want to fly with the Red Arrows - which TV company is up for it? nuts

Snivelling sod, ohhhh I am lonely, I would love to eat that moose but I cant its against the law, Ohh a bear may come and eat me. What the F*** did you think could happen if you plan on spend 3 months living in the Canadian wilderness? Was a waste of TV time if you ask me, certainly not worth 3 hours.

I enjoyed the first couple of programmes (seeing how someone with much less skills than mears etc. coped with hunting/builing shelters.. and the emotional side of things i.e. finding comfort in the camera) but the last one was a bit of a let down - too many tears and just gave up even after being given extra food dropped

plus where were the bears?!!

I'd like to see ray mears do the same thing in the same place for 3 months totally alone though - now that would be good

Difference is - we're not stupid enough to think we can do it, nor to think it will be worth three hours of prime time TV.

As far as I know, none of us here think we can do it, nor think it will be worth three hours of prime time TV.

I'll open it to the floor. 'Does anyone here think they can do it, or think it will be worth three hours of prime time TV?'
